I just returned from the local post office and one of the new first class stamps is dedicated to Mark Twain. The painting of Twain's head and face used on the stamp has a steamboat in the background.

Stamp

Hopefully this does not indicate the method by which the USPS plans to speed up its delivery service!

Here´s a link to the USPS website where you can see the Mark Twain Stamp (and buy it online too).

I like the image of a steamboat with the word FOREVER under it.

Thanks for the heads up Frank. I will have to buy a few hundred. Glad it's a FOREVER stamp. Once again, one has to wonder what steamboat they used for a model as it is certainly not one of those Mark Twain piloted. I was recently perusing my copy of Southwest Art and there was this lovely painting of a steamboat, except the steamboat must have been a figment of the artist's imagination. It appeared that the paddlewheel was almost submerged and the rest of the boat wasn't much better. A tiny little bit of research was all that was needed.....on both the stamp and the painting.

Steamboat Stamp

The boat on the stamp is the towboat MARY WOODS No. 2, which recently was almost totally destroyed on the White River at Jacksonport State Park in Arkansas, where she had been a museum boat since the late 1960's. The towboat was "decked out" to look like a packet until it was struck by a tornado in the the late 1990's. Capt. Alan Bates was a consultant for the restoration and strongly advised them to return the vessel's appearance to what it was -- a TOWBOAT! They did so and it was terrific -- until the sinking in 2010 when the boat turned over at her landing.

Anyway, the stamp features the towboat as she looked when masquerading as a gingerbread bedecked packet.

Nonetheless, I just submitted my order. Thanks to Frank, for the heads up on the availability of the new stamp!

Thanks for the explanation, but why was that particular boat chosen? Just curious. At least they used a real riverboat as compared to the Statue of Liberty stamp, which is a photo of the Las Vegas Statue of Liberty replica. Would love to visit the USPS Stamp Design Art Department. Must be headed up by P.T. Barnum.."The Smallest Show on Earth".

The Mark Twain Stamp !

Greetings From New Orleans ,
Today , I finally received my long ago order of the U.S.P.S , Mark Twain commemorative postal stamps , through the ever efficient and speedy , snail mail service ! What was a real pleasure was that I was able to order these stamps on line and did not have to suffer through the ordeal of standing in a long line at the post office !
These stamps are so nice that I cannot imagine using them for what they were intended ! Furthermore , these stamps will make an immediate stamp collector out of any one and especially those of us that have ties to the river and this renown author ! My only question on this matter is simply , what took them so long ?? Can you get any more " Americana " than the likes of Mark Twain and a river steamer ?? Go Figure ! For that matter would it not be a HOOT , if the U.S.P.S. would come out with a Steamer Delta Queen stamp ?? However , I would just guess that this will never happen because at some point , some one in government would have to come up with a plausible explanation why the DQ is no longer in operation !
Just a suggestion , no telling how long they will be available and if at all interested I would NOT wait too long ! They are well worth the time and money spent to get some ! Thanks again , Frank !
Smooth Sailing !

Roll Yer Own

A commemorative postage stamp issued in memory of Captain Robert James Hammett. And, yes, it is a real U. S. Government postage stamp, although created at the Rabbit Hash Shipyard Design Studios "Skonk Works", Rabbit Hash, Kentucky.7366.jpg

And a unique stamp it is, featuring Capt. Roddy posing with the whistle of the Str. NATCHEZ during the 1982 trip upriver to Louisville for the steamboat race. Thanks Sam!

My large order of Mark Twain stamps arrived at my landing within three days of ordering and will be reserved for "river correspondence".

I was really surprised to find the Mark Twain stamps at the Leadville PO. The clerk didn't seem to know who I was talking about, but the clerk next to her did. There was a really nice steamboat stamp issued some years back, when they were 25c, and the boat depicted was real, but not identified. Do you remember that one?

Steamboat Stamps

Over the years since I've been a steamboat buff, a number of stamps have been issued with river themes, including one in 1962 commemorating Louisiana Statehood (featuring a sidewheel steamboat), The Great River Road, Arkansas River Navigation, New Orleans World's Fair, etc. In the mid 1990's the postal service issued a set of steamboat stamps, featuring the ROBT. E. LEE, FAR WEST, BAILEY GATZERT, SYLVAN DELL, etc. You can find many of these stamps available for sale on Ebay!
