Many have inquired about our dear friend and mentor, Capt. Alan Bates. Today Yvonne and I were honored to have son Larry Bates (who lives in Michigan) visit the museum. He had not been here in many years and it was poignant to hear him reminisce about his childhood visits with Capt. Jim and Loretta Howard when his dad brought him and his sister to call at the mansion in the 1950's.

Sad to report, Alan is now unable to talk on the phone or to receive visitors. Rita is doing OK and will observe her 90th birthday next month. The family greatly appreciates the concern of river friends and their continued prayers.

Thank you.

Thank you for the update, Keith. We have been thinking of Alan and Rita and praying for them always, but especially with the loss of the father of a life-long friend of mine in Memphis on Christmas morning.

I am honored to have become acquainted with Captain Bates, Rita, and his granddaughter Vicki the last several years when I became involved in the steamboatin' community. What a treat to run into any of them at an event. All were smiles and Captain Bates told me he is the "Louisville Hugger". I hope they can feel our love and concern.

We too are honored to know them. For those who do not know them, here is a picture of Alan and Vicki taken in October of 2005. Alan reported that after this trip Vicki said "I can die now grampaw, I've fired (steam locomotive) L&N 152 and piloted as steamboat...I mean, what's left in life to do?? Alan and I first met in Aug. 1961, although we had corresponded prior to that. Even though we would only see each other once or twice a year we became good friends. We have swaped overnight visits and shared many other steamboatin' activites over the years. Alan, Sharon and I want you to know that our thoughts and prayers are with you, Rita and your family. You have been a great friend and mentor to me as well as to many, many others.
