Zubik Fleet Question

Question perhaps for Bill Judd or John Fryant... Anyone out there recall first-hand what colors the Zubiks used on their sternwheel towboat fleet (particularly the color of the lower half of their main cabins) ??

Judging from old black & white photos of the HELEN Z, it was a light shade, like light gray or yellow. But photos of the HARRY Z seem to show a darker cabin color (red?). The HELEN Z is definitely a very light shade (not red), and it is the boat I am most interested in.

I'm working on artwork for our new 2007 Steamboat Calendar. For '07 the focus will be gas and oil engine sternwheel towboats, not steam. Lots of interesting photos. This will be our 6th calendar.

Certainly not red or yellow. Black and grey is what I remember. I'll look for photos taken in period 1950 to 1960. Some may be in color, but B & W was the choice back then. With over 10,000 photos and only the last 30 years on the computer and filed, it's up to my "old musty" boxes to verify. Zubik's famous fleet was always my prime time when in Pittsburgh, all ruined for an old ballpark. Bob Bosworth ran the Helen Z for a period and had a different paint scheme than "old man Zubik".

Thanks Bill! From what you have described, I'd say Charles Sr. must have used light gray on the HELEN Z's cabin, in the photo I have..

Steve

Sign me up for one of the new 2007 Steamboat Calendar show casing " gas and oil engine sternwheel towboats." I can only hope that the "Jane Rhea" will be one of them. Her painting was basic white with lower gray trim including the hull.
