101 years old now...St Mary's Challenger

I just love the design of these 1st steel hulled lakers!!!! One of my ultimate "fantasies" in life would be to ride these lakers around as a passenger... Only 2 ways to do it....get a job onboard (very unlikely, considering my experience) and to buy a raffle ticket through boatnerd.com!

Pete, thanks for posting about this historic laker. Like you. I would love to see her Uniflow engines work.

As the JS article mentions the BADGER too has Uniflow engines. This August 4 MOR will be making a crossing on the BADGER from Ludington, MI to Wisconsin and back. Maybe a lucky soul or two will be invited by the "Chief" into his realm of cylinder oil, steam and coal. I will say it helps if you have a USCG license and bring it along. More information on this crossing to follow at a later date

My great-great grandparents, Captain James Easson & Harriet Ramsdell were married In Manitowoc in 1852! He was a pioneer lake captain on Lake Michigan primarily, sailing 1st on schooners then on "steam barks"...

Manitowoc & Two Rivers is a beautiful area and they have an excellent museum there where the USS Cobia sub is parked!

I'm afraid that it has be that weekend. MOR has reserved in its name 15 motel rooms in Ludington, MI. for the nights of August 3 and 4. I'll be posting more information after it developes in a few weeks.

Well, we'll see IF I can wrangle a day free! The layover is not long in Manty...2 hours & 15 minutes...unless you wait for the late crossing east @ 12:30am!!!

It is ironic this comes up with MOR, as I was thinking of a venture east on the Lake Express & coming back on the Badger...

You're right Snyders is fantastic. I stayed there a couple of nights last summer and loved it, but that's not where I got the rooms reserved. I got the rooms at the Viking Arms Inn. It's very nice, as neat as a pin, and less costly. It's right outside of downtown Ludington on U.S. 10.
