I don't know how helpful this may be, but, given the amount of discussion on .org lately regarding steam equipment, I thought this might be a good link to post. Google Books has digitzed all 803 pages of John Fehrenbatch's 1894 tome "A Library of Steam Engineering," which devotes many pages to Western rivers style engines and equipment. Hopefully this could answer some questions!
The book can be found here: A library of steam engineering - Google Book Search
Discussion of Western rivers engines begins at Chapter XVIII on page 483.
Here's something of interest, a discussion of steam engine indicators (barrel and pencil mechanism) starting on page 307.
Thank you, Jon - that's quite a find !
Well, here's another one: Screw-propeller Engines ; Paddle ... - Google Book Search
Published in 1906, this is from the International Library of Technology, a series of writings on various marine engines. Section 23 (starting on page 96) deals with Paddle-Wheel Engines. The drawings appear identical to those found in an International Correspondence School text, "The Elements of Marine Engineering," Volume II, dated 1900.
Thanks ever so much for finding and posting those. I'm looking forward to some interesting study, even if I have no immediate use for the knowledge.
