The American Queen is 418 feet long and 89 feet 4´´ wide, and has more than just the wheel and engines from the Kennedy for propulsion. Does anyone know the dimensions of the Kennedy?
I don't know the KENNEDY's dimensions, but she was quite a bit smaller. But don't start worrying about whether the AQ will make adequate time with them - the z drives are more powerful than the paddlewheel. In fact, on her first UMR trip, she technically wasn't a steamboat, as the paddlewheel shaft had broken and she moved on only the z drives and made normal time. So one less thing to worry about before your trip!

I know the Z drives could do the job alone, I was just wondering if the Kennedy was more the size of the Mississippi III, or smaller like the W.P. Synder Jr.?
Did some digging for you in the archives last night and learned that the KENNEDY, built as a dustpan dredge by Dravo in 1932, is 234' x 44', while the MISSISSIPPI III is 220' x 39'. The W.P SNYDER, JR. is 151' x 32'. I have some slides I took of the KENNEDY (originally named DUNDEE) at St Louis Ship in 1978 when the DQ was there getting a new generator. The KENNEDY, which was named for James E. Kennedy, who worked in river control and dredging operations for the St. Louis district of the Army Corps of Engineers, was retired in 1979 and in 1984 was used as an exhibit at the New Orleans Worlds Fair. She then sort of disappeared from the scene and the next I heard was when they announced that her engines would be used on the AMERICAN QUEEN. I also heard that when they went to check on the possibility of using those engines, the KENNEDY was tied up in a remote Loozey-anna bayou under many trees and was literally crawling with snakes! I don't know what became of the boat after the engines were removed, but her sternwheel is/was exhibited at Lock and Dam #27 just above St. Louis. Anybody know if the boat still exists ?????
