Does anyone know what the top speed of Admiral and President would have been? I know that the hull on Admiral, having been a car ferry, wasn't built for speed, but on several occaisions it seemed as if the old gal could really get rolling. I suspect that President was designed with a much faster hull having been originally built for the Louisville-Cincinnatti trade.
Another question for Judy. I vaguely remember riding on a boat in NOLA sometime in the late 40's which I think had scape pipes and a wooden top deck which I think had tar sealing between the decking. This a very old memory since I was born in 1944, but for some reason I think it was a Streckfus boat and I think it was a sternwheeler. Any idea what boat?
Thanks.

It couldn't have been a Streckfus boat because they ended service by 1945, other than the PREZ and ADMIRAL. The GORDON C. GREENE went down there, but of course she was an overnighter. It might have been the IDLEWILD/AVALON - I think she went down there once, but usually didn't go past Baton Rouge I think. Dave T., help? Other than that, I can't think of any excursion boat still running in NOLA in the late 40s. One other possibility: could you have been on one of the ferries? The second deck was for passengers and pedestrians, so you might not have seen autos around....
Judy;
Hard to tell. I don't think it was one of the ferries. As I recall, it was a much longer trip than a ferry ride. The whole thing is only a very vague memory from back then. I don't think I returnes to NOLA until Admiral was there in 75.
