Tom Dunn's long-awaited book on the Steamer ADMIRAL is out and is available from Little River Books. John Carroll just tipped me off on this and I've already sent in my order! First Annie's tome and now Tom's...the ADMIRAL is finally getting some recognition!
Indeed, Another Awesome Admiral Book!
When I stopped at the Jeffersonville post office to pick up the museum mail this morning, I was pleasantly surprised to find a package containing Tom Dunn's just-off-the-press book, Admiral, A Boat Full of Memories. WOW! With yet another winter storm approaching this afternoon (SIGH!) and the usual daily routine at the HSM, I've had time for only a cursory glance. However, I can hardly wait to dig into this fine tome at home tonight, for it truly is a boat load of history and wonderful images.
All of us who rode the ADMIRAL at various stages of her career, as well as those who just heard about "The Big Silver Boat" will want to add this terrific new river book to their library!
BRAVO and THANKS Tom!

Keith, Has the Admiral ever been to Louisville? Seems like I saw her here once back in the 50's
The ADMIRAL never visited Louisville. She was laid up at Paducah in the early 1980's, but did not operate excursions.
ADMIRAL'S territory
The ADMIRAL operated exclusively in the St. Louis harbor, with the exception of 2 winters when she did the PRESIDENT's New Orleans harbor trips while the PREZ was laid up. One of these times was the winter of 1978 while the PREZ was being dieselized. I don't remember the other winter NOLA engagement.
The first trip of the ADMIRAL down yonder to New Orleans was during September 1972 for her five year hull inspection; there was no drydock in the St. Louis area that could handle her majesty's large girth. She left St. Louis on the 21st and arrived at Todd Shipyard on the 25th under her own power, according to Capt. William S. Streckfus' article in the annual Streckfus magazine of 1973. The ADMIRAL was in drydock for two days, and then on September30 she began the two week return trip under tow of Federal Barge Line's AMERICA.
Somewhere I have a slide of the ADMIRAL, taken from the DELTA QUEEN, as we passed near Cape Girardeau in 1978. The DQ was downbound from St. Louis and the ADMIRAL was returning from a sojourn in New Orleans.
ADMIRAL by Cape
Yes, that would have been when she was returning from subbing for the PREZ while the PREZ got dieselized I imagine. I'm sure Tom has that in his book, can't wait to get mine!
I went to Little River books site and could not find Tom's book. I was told that Tom has requested a reprint of his book and it was currently unavailable. I can't wait to get my copy.
I must also say that Mrs. Blum's book is truly spectacular. It helped me to pinpoint the chronology of my time aboard the "Boat"
