Captain Bill Bowell died yesterday. He operated the Padelford Packet Co., at St. Paul and ran excursions. He was also a student of steamboat history and donated his library to the museum at Dubuque. His passing is a loss to all of us.

Sorry to learn of Capt. Bill's passing. I always enjoyed chatting with him at river gatherings, and his book Ol' Man River: Memoirs of a Riverboat Captain, published in 2005, is a fine tome. A long and two shorts to his memory.

The Twin Cities newspapers are covering the story here and here. Capt. Bowell was known for founding the Padelford Riverboat Co. that still operates from Harriet Island in St. Paul. The library at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium in Dubuque is also named in his honor.
