Can anyone further identify Captain L. E. Sanders, the Pilot of the MISSISSIPPI? I posted the attached picture on a Sanders-family genealogy website, and said I wish I could claim this handsome gentleman as my ancestor, but, alas, I cannot. The photo has made the rounds, but other than identifying Captain Sanders by name, I've heard nothing else about him.

I give up I have looked in about every thing I have. Licenses 1878 and 1897 and1906 to 1912, census 1900 and 1910 St Louis, in Missouri, across the river in Illinois and in Tennessee. no L. ?. Sanders any where. Also checked Waterways Journal index. also checked Murdock for upper Mississippi, and Gould, and all the other sources I have at hand.

Fred Way mentions an "L. H. Sanders" in Way's Packet Directory as a pilot of the MISSISSIPPI (3975), as opposed to "L. E." or "L. M." Sanders.
Obviously, this riverman was well-known in his day, and it seems strange that such a distinguised-looking gentleman would be outside the realm of collective memory. Captain Sanders was probably known by someone we, now the older ones, worked with who had retired from the Memphis District before coming to the DELTA QUEEN. Thanks for the input.
I, too, searched through volumes of license listings for steamboat officers in various districts and came up with nothing for a Capt. Sanders. I'll keep looking!
