Hi All,
Received an email inquiring about a Captain Hiram Burch. A Mr. Jim Ledergerber purchased an old painting for very little money at a yard sale of Capt. Burch painted on what appears to be poplar wood. The date on the back is 1775. Authenification is in the process but Mr. Ledergerber would like more info. I found some in Capt. Way's Packet Directory but no dates of birth, just the name of the boat Burch piloted in the 1860s.
Would anyone on .org have any in depth information regarding Capt. Burch? I would be very appreciative of it. Thanks!
Taylor Abbott
capt Burch
Going on the date on the back of the painting of Capt Hiram Burch of 1775 and assuming he was an adult in the painting. it is my guess he can not be the capt Hiram Burch that died in 1868. I feel that this capt Burch was in the American Revolutionary war. and the one is Way is a son or grandson or even a nephew. If I don't get too side tracked I will do some more looking.
Same conclusion
I did some digging as well and came to the same conclusion. I was on Ancestry, Rootsweb and a bunch of other websites and could not nail it to the same one in Way's. Probably a descendant.
I did some searching found his obit, and in Jun 1816 he was on Shreves Washington when she blow her boilers. Gould and Lloyd say the Hiram Burch is the same as Capt Hiram Burch of Marietta. The 1880 census for Marietta, Washington, Ohio has Hiram Burch age 84 retired River Capt. born in Connecticut, in the household of his daughter Mary W. B. (Whiting Burch) Paine he husband is R.P. Paine (Rufus Putnam Ijams) age 60 an Oil refiner born in Ohio. In a commentary on the Washington instant I found that the back of the painting has the persons name, Hiram Burch, and date of birth as 1795, which changes the whole picture by 20 years. This is from a post by Jim Ledergerber that had this date and related information from the back of the painting. There were a fair number of initiate painters who toured the county in the early to mid 1800's. I have a pair of painting on wood of my great grant grandparents. Jim there may be one of Nancy floating around.
so here is the data I have: Hiram Burch born 13 Oct 1796 in Newtown, Fairfield, Connecticut. son of William Burch and Grace Northrup. Hiram Married Nancy Whiting 18 Feb 1821 in Mason, Virginia (West Virginia) He died 27 Nov 1882 in Marietta, Washington, Ohio. They had 4 girls only the middle two lived to maturity. I dug up more if anyone is interested. I am likely related but couldn't make the connected tonight.
Thank You!
Many thanks for the information! Since my posting, I was able to run across similar information but will be forwarding the material you all have researched and found to Mr. Ledergerber. Hoping to see the work in person and have our antique guru check it out for themselves and give him a better idea of its age.
As always, Thank You!
