I remember a post several years ago about the Chris Greene's hull being on the Kentucky side of the river above Cincinnati and I look for it everytime I go through there, but have never seen it. Can someone tell me the exact mile mark it is at?
I'm northbound at mile 456 as I write this and still searching...
Thanks,
John
CHRIS GREENE hull
Oops, probably too late - its at Dayton Ky, don't have my charts handy. Bobby Harrison's place, if you know that....
Well, that explains why I couldn't find it...I was looking in the wrong place!! I was under the impression that it was somewhere above the Coney Island bridge. Have to look again when we go through s/b.
Capt. John: The hull of the CHRIS is sinking further into the mud as the years pass and she's become a really BIG "flower pot" of sorts. However, the last time Judy and I were up there (at least 6 years ago) the capstan was still on the forecastle, so look for that. On our last visit, the TOM was also nearby, beached out and being cut up for scrap. The faded names of both vessels were still proudly emblazoned on the bow along with the draft marks. It was poignant to see what was left of those boats -- together one last time.
Here are two images, taken in April, 2000 during high water, showing the remains of the Str. TOM GREENE (being dismantled) and in the distance is the hull of the Str. CHRIS GREENE, "submerged" into the ground, but with the capstan and a winch showing on deck. Thanks to Capts. Bill Judd and Bobby Harrison for making arrangements and allowing Judy and me to visit several times to take photos of these famed Greene Line steamboats.

Cap, you are right. Both of the hulls of the CHRIS GREENE and TOM GREENE are beached out up at Melbourne, Kentucky above the Coney island bridges. There are a couple of octagonal shaped houses up on stilts right by the old hulls. If you find those homes, you've found the old boats. They're pretty easy to miss since they have turned into planters.
You can see the Chris Greene hull on Google Earth. Was rather easy to find.
