Saw this on one of my Civil War forums and thought I would share this with you. It's an 1861 print of the interior of the steamboat Princess.9491.jpg

Civil War interior era print of Princess.

Thanks Jeffrey for the nice print. Looks much like the interior of the J M White which burned on December 13,1988 when a careless passenger accidently started the drapes on fire with a cigarette. The American Queen Steamboat has tried to duplicate their main dining room as close as possible to that of the J M White an has done an excellent job. Very elegant gold plates nice silverware not to mention impeccable service an Fabulous food. Cruise Critic see their website is sponsoring a give a way for a cruise for 2 on the AQ so sign up you will love it. The two guys on the right at the "help desk" say:

"Excuse me good sir, but can you kindly inform us as to what the wifi password might be?"

I'll get my coat.

I guess that a bar can be considered a "help desk" by some!

Fred Way, Jr. in his magnum opus Packet Directory reports that the J.M. WHITE caught fire near St. Maurice Plantation on December 13, 1886.

All of her furnishings were in storage by Capt. Tobin; they were off of the boat as Capt. Tobin leased the boat out to just carry freight. Some of her furnishings still survive as Capt. Tobin's two daughters would sell these warehoused pieces to collectors from their Royal Street furnishings store in New Orleans.

"Doc" Hawley reports that he has an iron spike from the hull garnered from when he and Ray Samuels walked on the WHITE's remains which came up for air during the record low water of 1988.

J M WHITE furnishings

There were several items in Bert Fenn's auction. Fittingly Maunsel White acquired some. I believe the Custers got others.
