Frank Braynard who is to ocean shipping what Capt. Fred Way is to the Mississippi River passed away on Monday December 10, 2007. Braynard had a keen interest in the Mississippi River too. In 1982 he was one of the august judges for the New Orleans to Cincinnati race of the DELTA QUEEN and MISSISSIPPI QUEEN. Those who had the pleasure of meeting him were clearly better for the experience.

Hi, Frank & steamboating colleagues:
I hate to say 'thanks' for news on the passing of any personage, but do appreciate your report on the death of Frank Braynard. His books, articles and related commentary crossed the lines of 'pure steamboats' to the great 'blue water ships.' Like Capt. Fred Way, Braynard was one in a million. Correct me if wrong. Didn't Braynard begin his love of ships/boats as a journalist in the days when the 'press boat' met the arriving big liners in New York to get the latest news and interviews of notable personages aboard? The reporters would meet the ships, conduct interviews, and then climb down the ladder for the cutter to run them back to Manhattan to meet press run time before the big ships pulled into the piers on the Hudson River.

I was told that Braynard attended a along ago S&D of PIONEER RIVERMEN meeting in Marietta. If he was there then I missed him not knowing who he was attending.

Cheers,
R. Dale Flick
