Sure glad David Dewey brought up the steam tug Eppleton in another thread. When I answered Bruno question on Panama canal paddlewheelers I caught a lot of flack from my river coharts as to how I knew such things. My brother-in-law was involved with west coast steam tugs and ferries and got me interested. The Eppleton is on display at the Maritime Park in San Francisco.
Built 1914 and towed coal ships on the Wear and Tyne rivers in England. I know she has side lever engines which allow each wheel to operate seperate.
She operated till 1964. Her Panama Canal trip was in 1970. Also at the Maritime Park is the big steam tug Hercules. Maybe our West coast friends can shed more info.
Flack from cohorts
Capt. Judd: be it known that you will never catch flack from your river cohorts who know you are close to allknowing on most anything waterborne! You just happen to be more reticent than others about admitting your vast knowledge and experience!
