Today we observe the 93rd anniversary of the 1914 launching at Pittsburgh of the staunch steamer IDLEWILD, later the AVALON and now our beloved BELLE OF LOUISVILLE. Today also is my dad, Ken Norrington's, 76th birthday. A whistle salute to both!

Keith & steamboating colleagues:
Many thanks to Keith for his timely postings on the dual birthdays for not only the IDLEWILD/AVALON/BELLE OF LOUISVILLE, but for Ken Norrington's 76th B-day. Again I was asleep with gum in my mouth. I'll get a card off to Ken but wonder about sending a card to a steamboat. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO BOTH AND MANY, MANY MORE!
Cheers,
R. Dale Flick

Actually, a card to the boat would probably be appreciated by the crew, and something to show the management & the city how widespread is her fame and appreciation. What about an address??
While you're writing, one to your congresspersons too; support HR 3852, the bill to extended the DQ's exemption!!

The Belle's address is: 401 West River Road, Louisville, KY 40202. You can also contact the boat via the website at www.belleoflouisville.org. Plans are already underway for the boat's centennial celebration in 2014, ably overseen by Ms. Kadie Engstrom.

HBD and then some...
She was less than half her age when I started working aboard when she answered to the musical name of AVALON. What magical summers of our youth we celebrated together, and now there are but a few yet standing who were there then. Glad we are both still around to celebrate the 93rd anniversary of this venerable and enduring lady.
