I've been looking for days to find information on historical riverboats along the Mississippi (for a school project), and am having very little luck. I need to make a timeline of riverboats that cruised the Mississippi, starting with the first ever made. It's not moving quickly. I've been getting a lot about the explosion of the Sultana in 1865.
What I'm asking is; does anybody know about links or books that would have this kind of information? Whenever I type anything with the Mississippi in a search, all I can find out of it are upcoming cruises along the river. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
There are a number of books and web sites that might help you. Among the books are;
"Ways' Packet Directory" by Capt. Frederick Way, "Steamboats on the Western Rivers", by Louis C. Hunter, "The Steamboaters; From the Early Side-Wheelers to the Big Packets", by Harry S. Drago, "The Western River Steamboat", by Adam L. Kane, "From Paddle Wheels to Propellers", by Charles P. Fishbaugh, and "The Western Rivers Steamboat Cyclopedium", by Capt. Alan L. Bates.

Zach, All very good suggestions from Hank.
Wonderful as the internet is, I suggest you visit your public library. It blows the internet away with the info. contained therein, especially so if you live in a large city.
Thank you very much. I can't tell you how much help you guys are!!
