The Courier-Journal "Indiana Weekly" supplement carried a fine two page article yesterday on the 50th anniversary of the Howard Steamboat Museum. Besides the nice story, several large color photos and a listing of upcoming events were included.

In other news, affable steamboat engineer/museum board member Kenny Howe was appointed chairman of the exhibits committee at the January board meeting -- MUCH to the delight of this curator. Those who missed Kenny's great talk (with fascinating slides) at the museum last fall for a meeting of the MOR S&D chapter will get another chance, as he will be the speaker for the annual S&D meeting in September.

Visit the museum website at www.steamboatmuseum.org for news and information on programs.

Congratulations to Kenny on his new "job". Some of us farther away river fans had been batting around whether we would make the trek to Marietta this fall. Looks like a done deal now. No way could we miss one of Kenny's great talks along with those wonderful slides!

Hi, Keith, Jo Ann & steamboating colleagues:
Thanks to Keith for keeping us all up to date on events for the Howard Museum and for Jo Ann's kind words. Congratulations to Kenny Howe on his new position at the museum. His October presentation for the MOR chapter of S&D was spectacular in all ways. His slides, 'insights,' and explanations on how to lay out, cut and assemble the DELTA QUEEN's wheel showed us all how it was and should be done. I've no doubt his September S&D, 2008 program will be a hit.

The Howard Museum is a gem and additional thanks to all of the hard workers there who keep things moving ahead. The list of volunteers and staff is too long to quote and I'd be sure to leave deserving names out. Much has been done since 1958 and the late Loretta Howard. I was there as a visitor back in 1958 for the first time and knew then I was 'hooked.' It is nothing less than a miracle and Loretta would be excited and thrilled at all in the last 50 years. If I lived closer I would 'volunteer' more in some humble capacity. Judy Patch's 'Rise and Shine for the Streckfus Line' presentation June 28 will be a real winner. Charles Preston Fishbaugh's definitive book, 'From PADDLE WHEELS to PROPELLERS,' Indiana Historical Society, 1970 on the Howard family and enterprise is a gem and if any .orger ever sees it in a book store or on an internet link--GRAB IT ASAP! Some regional libraries may still have it for general circulation.

Cheers,
R. Dale Flick

For years Keith, I and others have suggested various S&D members as speakers and have lamented when our ideas were ignored. Looks like it took a branch chapter to finally get it done! Good thinking MOR for 'introducing' Kenny Howe as a speaker! Too often organizations think they have to go outside their memberships for programs - S&D is certainly one with a wealth of 'homegrown' naturals. Just because one may not have been on the banquet speaker's trail doesn't mean one couldn't produce a great program. Couldn't you see a couple of rocking chairs on stage with Helen Prater and Virginia Bennett reminiscing the old Greene Line days? Or Capt. Charles Henry Stone giving a longer performance than his coveted Saturday meeting speeches? Or Capt. Mike Williams retelling bringing the DQ back to life? Betty Bryant on showboats - she was at an S&D meeting and did an unofficial off campus presentation which was great; and hard to believe, but Ruth Ferris was never asked to speak, what a horrible omission! on and on...
