Several weeks ago the Great American Steamboat Co. had pictures on their AMERICAN QUEEN blog of putting the cupola back on top of the pilothouse, thus making it look much taller. There were several old steamboats with very tall pilothouses, but can any of them top this one?7737.jpg

The truth

Ok, so that isn't a domed pilothouse - the GORDON C. GREENE is docked in Charleston W.bg VA. with the dome of the state capitol lined up behind it.

Some actual domed pilothouses

Here are 3 boats whose pilothouses actually had domes:
1) the G.B. KNAPP
2) the GREAT REPUBLIC
3) the PHIL SHERIDAN7738.jpg7739.jpg7740.jpg

A couple more...

Here's one you don't see everywhere:
1)the PEOPLE'S FERRY port of Burlington Iowa. Her 'dome' is similar to that of the Streckfus Steamers' WASHINGTON.
2) and my favorite dome - the CAPITOL. Many of Streckfus' boats had domes. I'll post more pix later, time to meet a friend at a pizza parlor now!7741.jpg7742.jpg

2) the JS DELUXE
3) the SIDNEY7747.jpg7748.jpg7749.jpg

Dome sweet dome.

1) the WASHINGTON - it wasn't really a dome, just the outline
2) the ferry DAVENPORT - the boat on the right. The other is the ROCK ISLAND. The steeple to the left of the picture was on the railroad station on 20 St., the Burlington I believe.
3) the W J QUINLAN, which was the old DAVENPORT rebuilt7750.jpg7751.jpg7752.jpg
