Believe it or not, the calendar says it's SEPTEMBER! We are working on mailing out registration materials for the upcoming STEAMBOAT BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION here at the museum on September 23-24-25, which includes the dinner cruise aboard the Str. BELLE OF LOUISVILLE on Saturday evening. ALL CURRENT MUSEUM MEMBERS will receive this mailing. If you are not a member and would like to be, we have various categories of membership which begin at $15 and which support the ongoing programs of the museum. You will receive all notifications of events throughout the year, as well as the newsletter, BITTS & PIECES. You can locate the membership information by clicking on Howard Steamboat Museum - Home Page. We welcome and appreciate your membership!

Thanks very much and we look forward to seeing lots of steamboat buffs and buffettes "on deck" later this month for a fun filled weekend!

PS: The mail just arrived in the museum office and brought the Summer issue of Traces, magazine (Volume 23, Number 3) of the Indiana Historical Society. The color cover is a striking close up scene of the steamer NEW ORLEANS by artist Gary Lucy. An excellent and well illustrated article by Dr. Leland Johnson about the 1811 voyage of the boat is entitled Harbinger of Revolution. There is also a stunning full page photograph, taken from a bluff, of the Streckfus sternwheeler J.S. (built here at Howard's in 1901) landed at Rockport, Indiana. Tonight at the "Little Museum That Can and Does!"

Tonight was the dedication of the new Collections Management Facility over at the Howard Museum. Rick Madden, President of the Howard Museum Board of Directors introduced the history of what became the CMF, Rev. Jim Wilkinson (Chaplain from the Seamans Institute) offered an Invocation of dedication, Mr. madden then came back and Introduced the Capital Campaign Committee. Keith Norrington (Curator of Collections) came up next and spoke of the continuing "Fulfilling the Dream of the Howards" with this beautiful new building. The Hon Tom Galligan, Mayor of the City of Jeffersonville cut the ceremonial ribbon to open the new facility officially. Over 90 people were in attendance from all over the rivers system. The guests then adjourned to the Carriage House for a dessert buffet and to view the beautiful photo exhibit put together by Board member Jim Reising. There was lots of river commaderie amongst the crowd.

Here are a few pictures from the event.

1. Mr. Rick Madden welcoming the audience to the Dedication
2. Keith Norrington shares his excitement for the new facility
3. The crowd assembled for the dedication. Note the "AVALON" Pilothouse nameboard in the background on the wall...painted by Captain Clarke C. Hawley while working aboard the vessel.
