Jerry Canavit did send some great pictures of the JAMES P. PEARSON (the later Julius C. Wilkie) some time ago. Sorry Jerry for the delay posting them.

Here is just one of the pictures. You'll find the rest here in the JAMES P. PEARSON picture gallery, together with some history writing about the PEARSON. (if you get an error message on the gallery page, please hit the reload button in your browser).

Thanks very much to Jerry for these wonderful pictures and the historic information about her.

Franz

P.S.: When opening the gallery, you'll recognize a new design etc. of steamboats.org. For about two week now I'm working (almost full time) on a new steamboats.org which will be online very soon (that's also the reason why I haven't been very responsive to e-mails in the last couple of weeks).
Idealistically you'll not recognize much changes on your end. On my end, the whole website is new from a technical point of view, as now all content is hold in a database and can be maintained very comfortably compared to hundreds and thousands of single pages before. The new steamboats.org is not fully tested, so you may find one of the other problem, or pages not working - but I didn't want to put the PEARSON gallery into the old system now as the new system will hopefully be ready for public launch very soon ...864.jpg

James Pearson pictures.

These are really some great pictures......Had not seen the early ones. I was just a kid when they pulled her up the bank in Winona, my dad took me down to have a look at her.
Thanks again for the posting.

Franz, is the new site supposed to be compatible with Firefox? The PEARSON page contains no active elements when I load it.

While going through some old copies of The Waterways Journal over the weekend I happened upon the issue of November 10, 1956. An article under the Upper Mississippi news column proclaimed JAMES P. PEARSON ENDS LAST TRIP AT WINONA. The old sternwheeler arrived at Winona on October 28th at 1:00 AM, towed to its final home by her namesake diesel successor of which Capt. Truman Hedrick was master and Henry Bell, engineer. More than 1,000 persons crowded Levee Park the following day to view the old steam towboat, which had been purchased from the Moline (IL) Consumers Company by the Winona County Historical Society to become a steamboat museum and monument to the city's pioneer days.

Here is a photo of the boat, taken by the late Dr. Lewis I. Younger, of the WILKIE during the 1965 flood in which she appeared to be afloat.879.jpg
