From looking at that last photo you posted, Judy, it appears those 'scape pipes weren't quite so far forward as they appear in other shots; maybe only 10 feet forward or so from the forward end of the engines.

Results of Calliope Research to Begin Appearing in Print

Jonathan's posting of his latest compilation of excursion boats/towboats carrying calliopes gives a little peek into the wealth of information he has unearthed (or painstakingly pieced together, as the case may be) since his calliope project began back in the summer of 2008. His first print "installment" reporting on those findings occurs in the March 2011 REFLECTOR, where he will attempt to follow the elusive trail of the DQ's calliope from its earliest days. This piece of the story was chosen for the inaugural chapter because of her ladyship's wide spread fame and struggle for continued operation.

Jonathan has also consented to the editor's request to publish other salient details from his research efforts from time to time in future issues. In fact, he made a previously unknown (or undocumented) discovery last fall about the first steamer J.S. which is also reported in this upcoming issue. We encourage our S&D readers to spread the word and invite new and former subscribers to have a look-see in this Bicentennial Year. We hope that you won't be disappointed at what you see!

Actually, the first installment concerning the DQ calliope will be in the June 2011 issue, not March.

I stand corrected! Yes, the June issue is where you will find his DQ calliope history. Jonathan's story was originally slated for publication in March, but because of the many features, articles, and huge photo spreads that appear in this upcoming issue, he got bumped back to June. Looks like ol' dad's memory slipped a bit there.

We'll forgive you that memory slip. Can't wait for the March issue!
