...via New Orleans. Just got a call from Curator Keith, who is sitting in the Officers Mess of the DQ with the recently donated collection in front of him. He is astounded at the wealth of materials: Jim Burns' eyeglasses, photos of the fabrication of the hulls in Scotland, letters from Tom Greene, the shipyard toolbox with a plaque on it showing it was used in building the FORT SUTTER, and on and on. As was noted a bit when the donation was made to the DQ, the existence of these items wasn't really known - some people thought they had indeed acquired all of Jim Burns' artifacts, but that is obviously not the case. Travis has a digital camera and they promise to post some pix this evening of the collection spread out in the Officers Mess. Keith is staying in 212, and said it is very comfy, although the weather is cold. Fred Rich and Dan Lewis are going to try to raise steam this afternoon, so there's a good chance for a calliope concert with Travis and Keith aboard. Stay tuned!
Cruising Down the River
Keith and I went on the lunch cruise on the SOUTHERN BELLE and got some interesting pics...here are a few for you all to enjoy.
You can see Keith at the SOUTHERN BELLE"s van
The DELTA QUEEN on the North Shore as we passed by
and
The amazing camber and sheer of the SOUTHERN BELLE, another phenomenal Capt. Alan Bates design.
A few from the Officers Mess
Here are a few pics of Curator Keith hard at work helping preserve the Burns collection on the DELTA QUEEN.
A little snippet of the collection
Here are a few of the great things in the collection. This is just the tip of the ice berg of what is in this great collection here aboard the DELTA QUEEN, so graciously donated by Miss Antrim.
Good Morning from aboard the Str. DELTA QUEEN!
It's another beautiful morning aboard the "Legendary Lady", with bright sunshine and warmer temperatures. Still some colorful fall foliage remaining here along the Tennessee River. After a BIG Southern breakfast in The Orleans Room, Travis and I were just down in the boiler room where Chief Fred Rich and Dan Lewis are raisin' steam. Although we don't leave the bank it's still a tremendous thrill to again be aboard "the BIG Delta", as the late Capt. Rip Ware always called her. I have greatly enjoyed my Texas deck cabin, replete with a Christmas wreath on the door!
The SOUTHERN BELLE came upriver twice last night, all bedecked in white lights for the holiday season and looking somewhat akin to a scaled down version of the famed Str. ISLAND QUEEN! We go out on deck to wave to Capt. Mike and his crew, as she cruises by the DQ so closely that you can almost reach over the railing and shake hands with her passengers!
So MUCH to tell but so LITTLE time. Stay tuned for further reports and photos! And, again, a whistle salute to Leah Ann and Randy for all they have done -- and continue to do -- to keep our beloved steamboat ALIVE! It is an honor and a privilege that they asked me to assist them with the preservation of the fabulous Burns Collection, further documenting the fascinating saga of the Str. DELTA QUEEN.
"Curator Keith"
Keith, I was so pleased to be able to see some of this collection last weekend on the DQ. How about those rollar skates? I'm so glad you're there to help preserve these valuable items.
And, on another note, I hope we left #212 in good shape for you when we left Monday!!

Huffin' and Puffin' like a Steamboat!
Just returned from a hike up to the bridge to get some great photos of the DQ. It's really warmed up today and with the steam "UP", it's really toasty aboard the boat! We might need air conditioning before the day is over! Coolidge Park is teeming with people, making the most of this glorious autumn day!
Ginnie, the room was in excellent shape and I'm happy to know that you and Ralph were the occupants just before I moved in! I can still feel the "friendly vibes" of river family!
A festive wedding reception is currently underway in The Orleans Room. LOTS of people aboard and the ol' DQ is alive with activity and music!
Happy Steamboating!

As usual, the place where all the posts are supposed to be is blank...
Modify your Mode
Lex, check what MODE you're in and perhaps you need to switch to LINEAR mode. I'm using a computer in the forward cabin lounge near the Purser's Office of the DQ and it was not showing postings until I changed it. Go to DISPLAY MODES at the top of the page to make changes.
By the way: Your MAN IN WHEEL sign survives in the Engine Room and Travis and I both posed with it for photos out on the fantail yesterday!
Would like to know what's happening, but I still have a blank screen where the posts are supposed to be. Could somebody fill me in on another thread. Especially if there are pictchas.....please?
I have the same problem as Lexie--software giltch?

Sorry, for this problem! I do get a blank screen too. But as soon as I´m logged in I can see the whole thread and all posts.
I remember we had this problem before. But I don´t know the solution for it anymore.
Actually we do need to update the software of this forum. But that requires a lot of work as all layouts have to be changed and some features Franz´ added won´t work with the new update. Currently we don´t have the time for an update. So please be patient with us. Sorry for all the glitches!
Carmen
Thanks
To Pat Carr for sending a private message to get to the posts. Sounds like you are having a great time. Is the mural still in the Orleans Room? Behind a curtain....pay no attention to the mural behind the curtain.....WA4141 clear
Lexie,
It was there in the spring, so I'll bet it's still there.

Still There!
Lex: Indeed, your wonderful steamboat mural survives. Concealed (and protected) by a curtain, but still very much in existence after 33 years. It also is featured in the DVD covering the DQ's last cruise, hosted by Toots Maloy and Bill Wiemuth. The DVD is shown regularly to "passengers" in the Forward Cabin Lounge and I think it is also available for purchase.
It was a really good "steamboat fix" aboard the DQ last week! Despite the day being dark, dreary and POURING rain, I'm back on deck at the museum this Tuesday morning with renewed vigor!
Fix
I'm way overdue for one of those fixes having not fired a boiler or tooted a whistle in 3 years. Did you play the calliope?
