Greetings from the still-soggy banks of the beautiful Ohio River in Jeffersonville Indiana. I'm here awaiting the Howard Museum Chautauqua this weekend. Unfortunately I didn't know that the BELLE had a public trip tonight, or I could have taken a ride on a beautiful evening, after Keith and I paid the first visit of the weekend to Kingfish... After uttering a few expletives, I got in the car and drove up the Indiana side and photographed the BELLE from various spots, and then went to the wharf to catch her landing. After taking some candid shots of her new deckhand in action, I got to talk with Capt. Pete O'Connell post trip, so the evening wasn't a lost cause by any means. But it pays to check the schedule on the website! BEFORE the trip!
1)upbound from Duffy's Landing, which was still mudcaked
2 and 3) the meeting of the 'fleet' : the BELLE upbound, the SPIRIT OF JEFFERSON downbound. The reason the BELLE had a public trip was that the group that was booked was too large for the SPIRIT, so the BELLE's charter group rode the SoJ and the public rode the BoL....

and now featuring:
the new deckhand, direct from the northlands of Maine, and indirectly from Pine Point NY and New Orleans LA, Matt (Bubba) Dow. He was working the capstan and then hauled the temporary stage up to the elevated walkway. He was so intent on his job that he didn't notice his 'grandma' taking pictures on the wharf!

Thanks Judy for these pics, and, I have to agree "what a pretty boat". In the set "the lighted lady", all three are of post-card quality!
Judy,
Thanks for these lovely shots of the BELLE! She sure is a pretty boat, especially when she's all lit up!
Thanks for your pics of the Belle! Since our late start of the season the crew has been very busy entertaining school kids and running evening charters. In fact, we had one our first 3-trip days yesterday, so you can see we are trying to make up for lost time! We look forward to seeing you aboard this season--safe travels!
*RE: 'Soggy Ohio River etc.*
Hi, Dan & Steamboating colleagues:
A too applaud Judy's reports and fine photos of the BELLE etc. Those of the boat between twilight and dark with light gleaming very fetching and often more aesthetic than those in total darkness.
BIG wind, storms last night here in 'Ragtown' with more gully washers this afternoon. When does this stop? I hope the Memorial Weekend shapes up better as many of us joining in with fellow veterans from previous wars to note the meaning. A huge flag hangs from my front Greek portico all weekend. Cheers!
