Dear Steamboating colleagues:
While working on the Big Sandy Wharfboat this afternoon, our dedicated post delivery man came down the hill and up in the office smiling. "Here, boys, your boat magazines arrived." And what a beauty this edition is by the hand of our talented, skilled Editor, David Tschiggfrie. How he does it I know not. From the front cover shot of the ISLAND MAID steaming up to CONEY to the back photo of the SPRAGUE there are steamboats and more steamboats with many related features. One fine Indexing of early steamboats by Prof. Jack White. 'Final Crossings' features a very lenghy obituary for Virginia Bennett written by Vic Canfield. Barb Hameister has crafted a touching tribute to Patricia 'Pat' Traynor. In 'Small Stacks' master model builder John Fryant gives us a 'peek' outside and in of his cute Str. THOMAS A. EDISON.
*~Please note*~ also the 'insert' letter regarding reservations for the grand 75th Aniversary of S&D this coming weekend of September 12th and 13th and the fun-packed motor coach tour with luncheon to Clarington with lunch at the beautiful home of Taylor Abbott's grandmother. Barbara Rush and the Ohio River Museum hosting this event. And that's not all planned as you will see.
*Those of you not yet members of S&D of Pioneer Rivermen or those not yet sending in your annual dues, remit your statement to S&D Secretary, Sharon Reynolds - 1002 Oakland Drive, Paragould, Arkansas 72450-4812. 'Reminder post cards' have also been mailed.
So, sit back, kick up and enjoy this great REFLECTOR edition. That's what ole Commodore Fred Laidley, Capt. Ellis Mace and I have been doing this afternoon at the Big Sandy Wharfboat.

Just back at the HSM after a lunchtime run downtown to the bank and post office -- where I found the March S&D Reflector in the mailbox!
As usual, Editor Dave has done a stellar job and I look forward to having some "quiet time" to really enjoy the latest issue to the fullest!
Happy Steamboating!
P.S. When I arrived home this evening, my personal copy was in today's mail, so I'm ready to settle down for some good reading tonight!
It even arrived twice at our landing earlier this week ;-)!
Editor Dave sent us a copy and the printer.

Alternate mode of delivery
Maybe I'd get mine faster if Dave would put it in a bottle and throw it in the river. it would only have to drift 100 miles, through 4 locks and dams......
There, there
There, there, Judy. Do we even know from whence the Reflectors are mailed? Are they being printed and mailed in PA, IA, China, who knows? Well, Dave probably knows. There may be a few copies on that missing jet. Haven't gotten mine yet, but that's no surprise. Still feet of snow on the passes and the Eisenhower Tunnel can become a parking lot in a heartbeat. In that movie, Castaway, they should have had a shot of Tom Hanks reading a wrinkled up Reflector.
Mailing point
They are mailed from Marietta Ohio, on the beautiful Ohio River, but they get to the Isar before the Mississippi! Talk about a river flowing backwards!!!!
Mine arrived yesterday and I intend to spend my weekend relaxing and enjoy reading my Reflector.
75th Anniversary Luncheon
Greetings all!
I would just like to take this opportunity to cordially invite you to Clarington, OH for S&D's 75th Anniversary celebration. My family and I are pleased that we are able to co-host the catered white tent luncheon in conjunction with the Ohio Valley River Museum at the home of my grandparents and hope that all will find it a beautiful and fitting setting for such an event.
Additionally, we hope all will enjoy visiting the Ohio Valley River Museum while in town and the exhibits planned. We are a small but mighty museum with an exciting future ahead!
Attached below are two views from around the lawn to pique your interests and also one of the museum exterior.
We hope to see you there and welcome you to our family home and rising star of a museum!
Judy, maybe I should mail one of our copies back to the UMR ;-)!

Well, mine did arrive yesterday, all in one piece, no wrinkles. Just juicy pictures of steamboats. I like to look at the pictures first.
Here too
Mine also arrived Friday. Love that ISLAND MAID cover shot!
*REFLECTOR by mail or packet boat?*
Hi, Steamboating colleagues:
Glad the stellar March, 2014 REFLECTOR is at last filtering in at various destinations across the U.S. and even in Europe. I, too, have noticed the variance in mailing by 'Richardson Printing Co.' in Marietta and when it arrives hither and yon. Funny, it can vary for sure with some not receiving a copy until many weeks later. I've even had mine be totally lost and never received--several times. 'Richardson' mails all at one time, but they find their way up to the regional U.S. Postal depot in Columbus, Ohio. After that it's a good question. Again, several big bundles are dropped on the QUEEN CITY, HUDSON or VIRGINIA for Cincinnati and all points after that.
A number of years back there seemed an unusually large number who didn't receive it that month. I got on the stick, phoned up to Columbus talking to a nice 'PR' person handling "customer affairs." Within 24 hours I got an answer that, "They were found in a back storage area ready for the trucks. So very sorry." Well, what do I know?
