And even MORE views of the ADMIRAL calliope and whistle! The first view (1971) is looking across the pilothouse roof toward the stern, with the St. Louis riverfront in the background, including the GOLDENROD SHOWBOAT, Str. BECKY THATCHER and in the distance is the DELTA QUEEN. The second image (1971) is of the whistle, from the Str. J.S. DeLUXE. The third photo was taken in August, 1969 during a cruise. Calliopists on the ADMIRAL were Harold Nienkemper and Dick Renna, who was the bandleader. All pictures are courtesy of Dave Tschiggfrie.

Keith,
Here's one more addendum to the CAPITOL/ADMIRAL photo extravaganza. This appeared in the Dubuque Telegraph Herald, advertising the CAPITOL's June 14, 1935, high school charter excursion from Dubuque. The interesting thing to me is the prominence of the calliope in this Streckfus ad, this at the same time that the instrument was not even placed aboard the new, streamlined flagship of the Streckfus fleet, the PRESIDENT. Doc told me that one of Dick Bissell's fondest memories of the CAPITOL's excursions here was listening to Fate Marable play "Dardanella" on that instrument. Oh, for an audio recording of those golden oldies on the Streckfus Line!!
Where is the ADMIRAL's CaLLiope now,,?? I've heard it was knocked off the roof by a bridge, and was never put back on,,...
I know where most of the Nichol CaLLiopes are ,,but this one...
4 chime whistle
In looking through these pix again, I noticed the JS' 4 chime whistle on the ADMIRAL. It had also been on the PRESIDENT. Maybe this was discussed already, but when was it on each boat, and where is it now?
LoL Judy off the subject just a bit, that email address sounds like call letters. Lets see WYH-6868 or WA-4141. Sound Familiar?
call letters
You've got it, Mel. wzc8491 is the NATCHEZ. John Mullen uses wa4141. Capt. Don Houghton of the NATCHEZ is the only other one who got my address!
ahhhhh ok hmmm wonder whos using WYH 6868, the MQ's.
Interesting! That fourth and smallest whistle on the chime appears to be a full octave higher than the next smallest whistle. I wonder why it was even added? The larger three would have formed a chord. This would form a chord with the high note accentuated by its octave.
