Questions re steamboat deck layout

I've found wonderful model plans, but what I really would like to find are:

1. How were "best boat" decks laid out?

For instance, it seems that the boiler deck tended to have a central passenger cabin that might extend to a skyllight in the hurricane or even Texas deck, while staterooms, which opened both to the cabin and the promenade, lined the outside of the deck,.

2. What then woudl be on the hurricane or Texas deck?

3. Where were: dining room kitchens, barber shop, bar, any other passenger services? Where the crew quarters? I assume the main deck was where cargo, human and not, and the lower passengers would be.

4. What am I leaving out?

5. How much variation was there? Can I get away with a little bit of designing my own steamboat for a novel?

Thanks! I start actually writing the novel next week.

Nan,
The best boats were of essentially the same design as other boats. The pilothouse would be on top of the hurricane or texas deck. Kitchens were normally on the main deck but the bar and barbershop were usually on the boiler deck.

There was certainly a fair degree of variation because most boats did not have formal plans and were easy to modify.
