Just a note for those who like to plan ahead and mark their calendars. This year's presenter on my "River Ramblings" program series (#5) at the Howard Steamboat Museum & Mansion will be none other than our own Capt. Alan L. Bates. The date for the program is Saturday, July 18th at 3:00 PM (EDT) in the carriage house, which is currently being painted and spruced up.
I've titled this program "River Reflections", inasmuch as Alan has graciously agreed to do a presentation concerning his various river experiences over the decades. There will be ample time for questions and I know Alan will be happy to autograph copies of his many books and steamboat plans, all of which are available for purchase in the museum gift shop!
Admission is $5 per person and all proceeds benefit the museum's operating fund. Judy Patsch will, as usual, provide the chocolate chip cookies!
More information will be forthcoming on the museum website at Howard Steamboat Museum - Home Page
No reservations necessary. Please join us!

Alan's reflections
I'll bring a double dose of cookies, as we'll want to plan to 'set a spell' to hear Alan's great recollections of his eclectic river career!
Sounds like another winner, Keith! Sure hope to be there - it's always a special pleasure to visit the Howard Museum............
Information is now posted on the museum website (Howard Steamboat Museum - Home Page) which includes driving information, etc.
As always, we look forward to seeing everybody for this annual gathering "by the river" to enjoy fellowship and river history edification!
Y'all come!
Any reservations required for the program?
No reservations required. All are welcome and we'll be glad to see you. Thanks very much for your interest!
Keith,
Please save two seats in the carriage house for a father and son from Mile 579 on the Upper Mississippi. Wouldn't miss this program for the world!
After this build-up, I'm tempted to not show. After all, I ain't so much.
Won't work...
A search party would be sent, you would be 'escorted' to the Howard as is. You wouldn't need a prepared speech or notes, its all there inside your brain already!!!!!!!
Ruth Ferris always said that the glowing introductions she often received when speaking at meetings and events made her think of the oldtime river reporters in the newspapers who, through their liberal use of complimentary remarks, could "make a little old tub sound like a floating palace"! Alan is a treasure trove of river experiences and we're looking forward to an afternoon of hearing all about them! And I know where he lives in case he doesn't show up!
