I am doing some Family History research and am currently focused on my g g grandfather J.F.W.Koch who came to this country as part of the Saxon Lutheran immigrants in 1839. He sailed from Bremen on the Barque Johann Georg and arrived in New Orleans on January 5, 1839. From there the group went upriver on the Riverboat CLYDE arriving in St Louis on or about January 24, 1839. Does anyone out there know anything about the CLYDE. I suspect that finding a drawing or photo is unlikely but it would be nice to know something of the vessel.

Str Clyde

Mr K

According to The Lytle-Holdcamper List, there were several steamers named Clyde. The str Clyde which best fits your date was a side wheel steamer built in 1836 in Cincinnati, OH. Its first home port was listed as Cincinnati. It was rated at 193 tons and its final disposition was "A39" -- which means that in 1839 it was abandoned, dismantled, or removed for an unknown reason from the list of active merchant vessels.

Good luck with your research.

hi Don

From Document 21 comes the following "Clyde built in Cincinnati in 1836 , tons 190, owners Brodwell and Co., captain Evans, hp of engine 45, high pressure (meaning over 10 pound to Sq inch) engine built by Wilder, Lyon and Company ( they operated 1832- 36) (Wilder, Tatum & Co. made engines in 1837)

Doc 21 covers boat operating in 1838, and was a report to the house of representatives. and included 357 steamboats.

hi Don
I took a look in my Missouri River Steamboat cards and Found the Clyde in 1839. " For Missouri River - The fast running s.b. Clyde, W. C. Cable Master having the greater part of her cargo engaged will leave for the above on Wed the 6th of March, for ft. or passage having superior accommodation, apply on board or to Mullikin & Platte." She departed on the 5th and was back on March 9th [meaning she did not go very high st Charles or Washington} She made another trip arriving back in St Louis March 28th On April 4th she left for New Orleans. In the May 27th Missouri Republican she is offered fore sale on liberal terms if not sold by the time she returns from Louisville she will be sold at public auction without reserve, Mullikin & Pratte. She was advertised into October this way.

High and dry in Utah.

Thanks for the info on the Clyde. It helps to get a better picture of my ancestor's experience.
