Thank you Dennis for this web site. This is fantastic. I had no idea that carousel operations this big ever existed anywhere! And to think that one still exists in the Netherlands. This is truely a one-of-a-kind just like the Delta Queen.

men-powered horses!

There is one in Munich, much smaller though, that once was powered by a man walking below the carousel in circles, pushing the whole wodden carousel construction. This carousel was built in 1913; since 1931 it's powered by an electric motor and still working.

It has an wooden air pipe organ with some percussion instruments that is playing while the carousel is running.

The picture shows Leonie riding this very carousel. (picture courtesy of Susan Meerman, made just a couple of weeks ago).

some more pictures here (the carousel is the two pictures on the right side at the bottom of this web page. The other, much higher building on this page is the Chinese Tower in Munich's English Garden; beautiful, too, but not a carousel ;-): http://www.reiseagentur.de/Travelogs/MUC/Bgarten/html/Chinaturm.html 1051.jpg

I enjoyed the steam carousel website. I am very much into steam whistles and pipe organs. It's the steam whistles and calliopes that sparked my interest in steamboats and steam locomotives. In fact it was the restoration of the former RKO Albee WurliTzer in Cincinnati that led me to researching the physics behind the sound of flue organ pipes and whistles.

This research led to my building a small pipe organ from scratch whose sound resembles that of a Tangley Calliophone, an exhaust whistle with a 2+ mile range and patents on two entirely new classes of whistles suitable as more effective replacements for current warning sirens.

You will find videos of large and small pipe organs, carousel organs, band organs calliopes, steam whistles, my original toroidal whistle prototype test at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, my homemade pipe organ, etc. among my favorites.
