We had a meeting at the museum yesterday to continue planning for the Steamboat Bicentennial Celebration on September 23-24-25. The meeting agenda opened with coffee and scrumptious Italian cream cake, thanks to Yvonne, to celebrate Curator Keith's 57th birthday! We were most pleased to welcome Travis Vasconcelos as a new member of the committee, which consists of Kenny Howe, Jim Reising, Kadie Engstrom, Chuck Parrish, Yvonne Knight (chair) and yours truly. Details are being worked out and it will be a fun weekend of steamboating activities, including a Friday evening reception at the museum, ribbon cutting ceremony for the new collections management facility, presentations on river history, music and a dinner cruise aboard the Str. BELLE OF LOUISVILLE on Saturday evening.
Save the dates and watch for registration details to be announced on the museum website at Howard Steamboat Museum - Home Page
I am also serving on a committee for a special exhibition, "By the River's Edge" to be set up in downtown New Albany during the entire month of July. It will feature a traveling display on the history of steamboating as well as some unique riverboat artifacts from the local historical society and private collections. Details forthcoming!
Meanwhile, first things first! Don't forget that next weekend is the annual Chautauqua (spring festival) at the museum. River Ramblings will follow on July 16th.
Yesterday's meeting
That meeting included birthday boy Keith, Jim Reising, Kenny Howe, and Travis, and the cake, so I suspect it was more of a Hot Stove Navigation League meeting than one of a museum committee! I have just lashed Pumpkin, Sandy, Sunshine, and Angel with a wet noodle for not reminding me to post about that natal day yesterday. They did remember to send Keith a card however. So belatedly, think of Keith's birthday when you pull out that bottle of Heinz ketchup or mustard...
Keith,
What a great time we all had digressing about as we came up with some excellent ideas to make the Bicentennial very special for many people! Judy, don't feel bad, I was not only there and shared in the cake...but forgot to give Keith the card I had with me in my folder! Found it when I got home. I guess I will have to mail it...late as it will be!
Best belated Natal Day Wishes!
Travis
Judy...you must have been hiding behind the door, because you hit the nail on the head...very little committee discussion but a lot of BS-ing. Everything from the state of the DQ's boilers, to why the DQ's calliope could never have been on the WATER QUEEN as Jay Qumiby always stated, to the trottle arrangement on a center wheel ferry. Get the four of us together trying to keep the discussion on track is like herding cats.
Thanks to Yvonne Knight for the delicious cake...Travois has a picture of the event, hopefully he'll post it.
Jim, regarding the WQ calliope question, be on the watch for my article in the upcoming June issue of the REFLECTOR.
Let Them Eat Cake!
Here's the picture, taken with Travis' camera by a museum staff member. A bit blurry, but there was a whole lotta shakin' and laughing. The birthday cake is out of sight on the dining room table -- and my hold on the knife is from just being told that we have a BIG school tour coming in this week in the midst of all the Chautauqua chaos!
Port to Starboard: Chief Kenny, Curator Keith, Wizard of the Whistles Travis, Administrator Yvonne, and Photo Magician Jimmy. Never a dull moment at the little steamboat museum that CAN and DOES! And when we open up the wine...................
