My great grandfather, Thomas Powers, was a ships carpenter and lived in Cincinnati in 1840, Louisiana in 1846, Louisville in 1850, Evansville in 1860, Florence AL in 1866, and back to Evansville in 1870. Does anyone know if there was a steamboat manufacturer in the mid to late 1800s that operated in more than one of these towns. I am trying to figure out if Thomas Powers changed employers that much or if his employer moved him around to work in different places. Thanks for any help or suggestions on where to look.

Yes. I don't know about Florence, and my memory is a little vague about Evansville, but there were shipyards in all of those other areas you mentioned. Shipyards abounded in those days. They were churning out riverboats in somewhat the same fashion as automobiles today.
