Don't believe the steamboat as we know it was invented until 1807.

Part of the Tombigbee River was also man made, to tiein to the Tennessee River, enabling river traffic from the Tennessee to Mobile. This wasn't done until the fifties I believe.

The first steamboat west of the Appalachian Mountains was in 1811. Steamboats did travel on the Tombigbee after about 1820 and there was even a St. Stephens Steamboat Company.
