Hello folks,
I lurk on the boards once in a while. I really enjoy the postings on the various technologies of steamboats. I had the chance to tour the DQ engine room as little boy twenty five years ago. That was the first time I heard the term "California Cut-off" and "pitman". I think the engine designs are extraordinary. I wish I had a chance to see the Sprague before it's demise.

On another subject. I found an ad on ebay. Somone selling Steam Calliope.

Starting bid only 125K. Sounds like a heck of a deal.

Original Calliope of the Str. WASHINGTON at eBay

I'd just wanted to put an emphasis on Julian's posting as this really seams to be the original calliope of the WASHINGTON that is on sale at eBay! Anyone out there would like to donate $125.000 to Steamboats.org, so we can buy it? ;-))

If there are any "wealthy benefactors" out there who would like to purchase the calliope from the Streckfus excursion steamer WASHINGTON and donate it to the Howard Steamboat Museum, we would be DELIGHTED to have it! As has been reported on this site previously, the salvaged (and restored after a fire) pilothouse and stacks of the WASHINGTON are part of a unique boathouse of an estate along the Missouri River near St. Louis -- the owner having been a student of the late Miss Ruth Ferris. I'm sure that Travis ("Mr. Calliope") could fill in more details and enlighten us about the "steam pi-anna" being offered on EBAY.
