The attached photo, courtesy of Dan Owen, was taken on December 22nd at Alton, Illinois. A picture is worth MANY words! If anybody wanted to make a movie about the explosion of the SULTANA, here would be an excellent "set" for it!2800.jpg

Is this an end of the line dismantling? Where is this taking place?

Lex: The PRESIDENT is being dismantled at Alton, Il, and the pieces trucked to St. Elmo, IL, near Effingham, to be re-assembled to become a non-floating tourist attraction. If you check back in the archives of this message board, there are numerous threads about the unusual project.

Reassembling the PREZ

I presume all of the pieces and sections have been numbered for the rebuilding project?

I remember the previous threads, but I had assumed that the "parts" would be fewer and larger. So, I thought I had missed something. I'll have to look on a map to figure out where St. Elmo is. Is it on a river? Not that that matters. Just that it gets put together again.

I googled it so now I know. I wonder if they would miss the "P" . Probably... but not for a while. That's a mighty big puzzle. Pieces do come up missing in big puzzles.

Lex: Remember when you and I "rummaged" in a junk pile on the St. Louis levee to retrieve a few souvenirs from the PRESIDENT shortly after she had returned to New Orleans and the ADMIRAL had come back to her usual habitat? I still have the small block from the PRESIDENT. And SOMEWHERE there is a slide I took of you "up to your elbows" in junk. We surely had fun that day, carting a few "finds" back to the DQ. Them wuz the days!

By the way - a group of your steamboat drawings (framed) is currently being offered on Ebay!
