Jim,
Thanks for a rare look back into the past on the DQ. My first summer season aboard the boat was spent working in the gift shop, and I vaguely remember selling a post card quite similar to the view you posted. Very few of these cards sold however, since few passengers could recognize the location at first glance, as the Texas Lounge then occupied that old space formerly used as a library on board (this in 1969). I found a box of these post cards along with another partial box of old GORDON C. GREENE cards in the gift shop storeroom down in the forward hold, lugged them upstairs, and put them out for purchase. As I mentioned, very few of them sold. However, I have vague recollections of hearing a story about someone marking their stateroom location aboard the DQ on the old GCG postcard for the edification of their friends at home! Good thing we didn't have any QUEEN MARY post cards for sale -- passengers would have had a real tough time locating their cabin for friends and relatives!
The ships clock visible on the on the front wall above the loud speaker came from the TOM GREENE. Supposedly it was a gift to Tom Greene at the time of the TOM's christening from the Ohio Valley Improvement Assoc. It stayed there for years until some passenger decided it would look better on his/her wall at home and the clock disappeared one night.
As cozy as the Observation Room appears in the photo, it was usually very hot and uncomfortable, owing to the chimney passing through there. Hardy a soul frequented the place. It wasn't until the neglected space was air-conditioned that it became the Texas Lounge and habitable.
