The June 19th edition of The Marietta Times contains an article, photo and blog concerning the continually delayed $1.3 million renovation project pending for the Str. W.P. SNYDER, JR. Besides urgently needing a new hull, recently added to the list of woes is lead paint abatement. The entire article can be accessed by clicking on W.P. Snyder work delayed - MariettaTimes.com | News, Sports, Jobs, Ohio, Community Information - The Marietta Times

Before the SNYDER ends up like the WAKEROBIN, SAINTE GENEVIEVE, RIVER QUEEN (ex-GORDON C. GREENE) and other steamboats that have been needlessly lost, would it not be possible and prudent to foam the hull as temporary "insurance" before it's too late???3724.jpg3725.jpg3726.jpg

See the comments left by readers.....people just don't seem to care about history or where we came from at all these days. Probably part of the reason the DQ didn't get her exemption. People love the modern world and its technology but seem not to care about how we got to where we are!!! Kinda sad really.

It's the lead abatement that fries me. And just how much of that work could be done by volunteers and donations? That's how a lot of these projects get done. If we solely relied on state and federal budgets topreserve history, there would be very little of the past around.

Hi All,

I'm doing all my own lead paint abatement on ELIZABETH LEA, albeit with a good respirator and goggles. Be happy to help pitch in on the Snyder when I am finished. Incidentally if I am alittle off next time you see me thank the lead paint!

The Snyder has been at Marietta since 1955. How many of her visitors have become ill from lead poisining? Next thing you know someone will decree that the hull interior should be checked for radon gas!!!! And AMEN to Phil Johnson"s statement about people not caring about history.

We did our own "lead paint abatement" on the DELTA QUEEN, in 1971, with Big Cap operating a cutting torch and Jim Blum, Gabe, myself, and others removing the heat-softened paint with long-handled scrapers. At the end of the day we swept up the lead paint residue off the deck, put it into a metal garbage can, climbed into the can jumped up and down and crushed it all into powder. It two of us to carry the heavy can away to the trash; only half full after being stomped-down. Try that today.
