Remember when Cynthia Nobles posted about a cook book she wanted to do on the DELTA QUEEN recipes? It's out now and from what I've heard from friends who have seen it already, it's fabulous!

I've ordered my copy right away, can't wait to receive it in the mail 🙂

Check out at Amazon.com (pre-order price is $19.77): The Delta Queen Cookbook: The History and Recipes of the Legendary Steamboat: Cynthia Lejeune Nobles: 9780807145371: Amazon.com: Books

Excerpt from the press release:

The Delta Queen Cookbook: The History and Recipes of the Legendary Steamboat
Cynthia LeJeune Nobles Dishes Up Southern-Style Fare, From Crawfish en Croûte to Beignets

Nobles traces the story of the “Grand Old Lady” as she faced remarkable social, economic, and political challenges. The Delta Queen became a haven for illegal drinking during Prohibition, and she survived the effects of the Great Depression, World War II, and increasingly modern and sophisticated competition. Each chapter ends with authentic Delta Queen recipes—including Citrus and Watercress Salad with Chili Dressing, Roast Duck and Wild Rice Soup, Speckled Trout Pecan, Eggs Crawkitty, Steamboat Pudding, and more—proportioned and tested for home kitchens.

The Delta Queen Cookbook includes interviews with former crew, chefs, and passengers; over 90 historical and full-color photographs; and vintage and modern menus. History buffs, steamboat lovers, and home cooks alike will revel in the memories and tastes that make the Delta Queen one of America’s best-loved national treasures.

A member of the Newcomb College Culinary History Writers Group, Cynthia LeJeune Nobles contributed several chapters to New Orleans Cuisine. She lives in Baton Rouge with her husband.

I have spent the last 3 days perusing the Delta Queen Cookbook, and I can tell you it is fantastic! So many great looking recipes; we'll be trying a bunch of them. The history of the boat and the food on board is exceptionally well done. ALL who love the DQ need to get a copy. Great work, Cindy!

I tried the MISSISSIPPI QUEEN Bread Pudding this weekend on my very critical family (as I'm the joke in the family of the one who never cooks). It's all gone. They loved it and it was so easy!

A Whistle Salute for the New DQ Cookbook!

The Delta Queen Cookbook arrived at my landing and I certainly wish to offer my congratulations and appreciation to Cynthia Nobles for this wonderful contribution to steamboating history. Cooking is NOT my forte', but I just might "wade into the river" and try some of these delectable recipes, some of which probably could cause weight gain by simply looking at the pictures!

The fabulous photographs, foreword by Capt. Doc Hawley and the names of many other longtime and dear river friends add to the joy of this beautiful book.

Thank You Cynthia and Long Live the Delta Queen!8696.jpg

*RE: DELTA QUEEN Cookbook*
Steamboating colleaues:
Keith is 'right on' RE: the recently released DELTA QUEEN Cookbook by Cynthia Nobles. The book was a labor of love and talent on Cynthia's part for several years. Capt. Clarke 'Doc' Hawley's fine Forwrad [And additional editing] to the book says more in two pages than a whole chapter. History, lore of the boat incredibly detailed with facts/information not previously in print. As Keith says, the photos alone would make you gain pounds. A number of S&D of Pioneer Rivermen members, contributors to Steamboats.org, MOR of S&D made contributions in the form of memories, research, photos, ephemera. I've been working closely with Cynthia and the press in promoting the book, contacts for sales outlets etc. Cynthia will be making appearances here in Cincinnati along with radio interviews. A formal book review will appear in the December S&D REFLECTOR. An additional review to appear in the books section of Steamship Historical Society of America's quarterly 'PowerShips.' This book breaks new ground with the subject of cooking on a steamboat--or any vessel for that matter. CHEERS!

S&Ders in the cookbook mix...

Yes, several of us contributed without fanfare. Speaking of fanfare and S&D, there has never been anything posted about the S&D meeting in Marietta last month. Anything newsworthy to report about it?

*Cynthia Nobels in Cincinnati*
Steamboating colleagues:
Cynthia Nobles, author of the new DELTA QUEEN Cookbook, phoned me yesterday from her hotel here. She is in Cincinnati on a fast track involving radio interviews, book appearances at local emporiums. We couldn't meet up today due to appointments I had. She was also at BARNES & NOBLES in Nashville, TN on the weekend with us passing like two ships in the night down there. Attended a recption in the huge 'Opryland Hotel' finding it spectacular now with Christmas decorations going up. The book is going so well that LSU Press has started a second printing.

Cynthia reported the recent DELTA QUEEN 'Reunion' went very, very well with some 80 + attendees; albeit without Capt. Doc Hawley sending regrets due to recuperating from his broken hip as reported here. Talked to Doc twice and he's doing just fine.
