Looks good. I'm sure Dale's already ordered his, so I'll be the second check you'll receive for this dandy calendar!

WOW! My check will be in the mail too! That cover picture of the HELEN Z. is so good you can almost "hear" her churning sternwheel! As you probably know, she was moved to New Albany in 1969 to become a clubhouse for the Jaycees, who intended to put her up on the bank atop some old piers that once carried tracks of the Southern Railway. One setback after another occurred and the boat ultimately sank. The spring flood of 1970 "removed" the superstructure from the steel hull, which was later scrapped. A towboat captain told me sometime afterward that the wrecked pilothouse was seen up in trees near the site of Dam #43. I poked around in the wreckage at the New Albany waterfront and found a long oar with the boat's name stencilled on it and a few paddlewheel pieces like cocked hats, stirrups, keys, and gibs. Thanks for another dandy calendar!

Keith,
Yes the HELEN Z makes a nice calendar cover. You probably know that the HELEN Z is also in Way's Steam Towboat Directory, because she was originally steam-powered. Built at Dubuque in 1911 as the LIEUT. AUGUSTIN for the U.S. Engineers; 137.6' x 24' x 5'. She was one of 3 sisterboats; the others being the LIEUT. GURNEY and LIEUT. LEWIS. Converted to Diesel by Charles Zubik Sr. in 1939.

Thanks for your support!

Steve: Yes, indeed, the ol' HELEN Z. began life as a steamboat and I've seen a photo of her as such. Capt. David Smith once told me about somebody, in the boat's latter days of operation, sawing the handles (outer spokes) off her pilotwheel -- to the extreme chagrin of the Helen's master!

I forgot to mention a special thanks to Dale Flick and Dan Owen for providing most of the photos for this calendar!

Two other photos came from our collection taken by Capt Leon Ash (the BETTY, and a very interesting salvage shot of the TORNADO). And one photo is courtesy of East Carolina University, which of all places, is the repository of most of the Marietta Manufacturing Co. archives.

Attention all river enthusiasts,

If you haven't already ordered your 2007 calendar, put out by the good folks at HSPS, then what are you waiting for? Do you belong to a history group, preservation society, museum board, or do you or someone you know just love neat old boats? Then order your friends this calendar, it's truly a must have and makes a wonderful gift for friends, family, captains, pilots, engineers, mates, or deckhands in your life. The calendar is full of high quality images of times gone by, but not soon forgotten. All proceeds from the sales of the calendars directly go towards the continued operation and maintainance of the mv Barbara H, the oldest diesel sternwheel towboat in the United States. The Barbara H is utilized by the volunteers of the Historic Sternwheeler Preservation Society (HSPS) as an educational tool and operational display. The mission of the Society is to educate the general public about waterborne commerce and mainly what life on a 1920's era sternwheel towboat would have been like, through guided tours of this National Historic Landmark vessel. If you would like to see HSPS programs continue to be available to the public for future generations to enjoy then please help HSPS out with the purchase of a calendar or two, three, or four. :^)

We thank you for your continued support!
