Cap,

That original hull had a look to it you don't get in a modern boat. Yes, it extended her life and made things better for the company financially. However it was at a cost to her historical authenticity.

I often wonder how that new hull got into place with out affecting her National Historic Register status. Usually, you can't make changes which affect the original structure to that extent. I know on the BELLE OF LOUISVILLE the grey stripes (a point of contention witn many river fans) on her Boiler Deck bulkheads have to stay because she had them when she got accepted as on the NHR. There has been talk of removing them and hands were slapped!

I had heard about that. Maybe I'm in the minority, but I rather like those grey stripes!

Evidence of a scientific dictum....

....any matter, whe left unattended, will tend towards the greatest state of disorder.....

The best thing for a boat is to sail, the best thing for a plane is to fly, the best thing for a house is to be lived in, etc. Anything left alone tends to
deteriorate. Sadly, she is serving as a perfect example of a principal.
What a shame.....

So the MQ's is much older and it has encountered many a hardened object over her career, which could lead to problems in the structure.

I'm reminded of the constant, melodic drone of the water pump used to bail her out before and during a week's worth of hull repair in the middle of the 2006 season. She had a nasty underwater starboard side gash about even with the Cruise Director's cabin.

In the words of Roy Orbison, "It's Over".

Current MQ Status

Greetings From New Orleans !
Evidently not everyone has been brought up to speed lately but for the last few months the " Remains " of the Str. Mississippi Queen has been removed to the Harvey Canal , where she sits unattended and un guarded . She does sit behind a locked gate but for the most part she is un protected .
Having said all that , there is a move afoot to purchase the boat and a deal is still pending . Hopefully this will take place and she will return to service !
Smooth Sailing !
