If I wasn't busy handling logistics and hosting the pilothouse replica and MISSISSIPPI QUEEN bell dedication at the HSM tomorrow, I'd be with the Midwest Riverboat Buffs (of which I'm proud to be a LIFE member) for the summer meeting at Hannibal, Missouri. President/Master Judy Patsch and her crew have arranged a busy roster of events for the weekend, which includes visits to Mark Twain's boyhood home, the new Twain Museum (featuring a replica pilothouse and other great exhibits) a dinner cruise on the MARK TWAIN and an array of other activities. I'd love to have a BIG mug of that cold homemade root beer at the Mark Twain Dinette too!
I've always loved Hannibal, from many visits made there while aboard the DELTA QUEEN. My last visit was in 2003 and I was most pleased to see many improvements to the famous little town on the Mississippi.
So, a whistle salute and best wishes to all the buffs and buffettes who will be on deck for steamboat talk, fun and fellowship this weekend.

Root beer
Suzanne, Richard and I just came back from dinner at the Dinette, and yes, with their homemade root beer! I'm going to take a walk and case the place since I haven't been here since 2004, and that was just to pick up Doc and deliver him to Dubuque in record time for the Hall of Fame dinner. We've got 2 busloads in this hotel, one of which is full of quilters - I recognized them by their shopping bags! This Best Western is the place to stay, right in the heart of the MT buildings and just across the street from the Dinette. We've got a nice view of the river from our rooms, but haven't seen any traffic yet. Unlike what Sam is experiencing upriver with the CLYDE, the water level here is normal to low...if anyone is within shouting distance of Hannibal and would like a free dinner ride, come on over - we've had 4 cancellations today and they have offered their tickets to whomever would like them. Just meet us at the boat prior to 6PM Saturday.
Have a great time, Judy, wish I were there. please give my best to Kay Lynn and hubby....
Old DQ memory...
Last night we shared the elevator with a delivery guy from Cassano's Pizza...back in the 70s, Cassano's was right near the river and many DQ crew and repeat pax went over there for lunch. I believe that building is now the visitors bureau and Cassanos is out on the highway. Its a beautiful sunrise over the river this morning...
Pizza & Paddlewheelers
Somewhere, amongst the many dusty boxes of slides, I have one of Judy, holding a BIG pizza from Cassano's, with the DQ in the background at the Hannibal landing. Them wuz the days!
