Since Capt. Doc Hawley is boarding the DQ at Memphis today for the trip up to Cincinnati, here's a photo of him at the calliope of the Str. AVALON (now the BELLE OF LOUISVILLE) taken at St. Paul in 1957.

And in his 6 years on the river to that point he had risen from popcorn popper/calliope player to Mate/calliope player. He got his first Mate's license in August 1956, as soon as he turned 21. The first AVALON stop where he worked as Mate - Rock Island!
