Hi all,
This just dropped into my inbox, don't know if it's "secret" or not, but here it 'tis. From a "trusted source" to protect the poster. And I apologize for the format; apparently this program strips the table feature. I hope you can make sense of it. I tried converting it to something ledgeable, but my computer skills are lacking, I guess. Looks like the DQ is in lay-up for quite a while, and doesn't do the early season NOLA-Memphis/Memphis-NOLA trips, but just heads up river mid April all the way to Cincinnati in 14 days--now that's a TRIP!

Um, some translation, might help. First is listed the date & day, then what the DQ is doing, Then What the MQ is doing, and lastly, the AQ. I believe the cities in all capitals are boarding/unboarding locations.

David, I'll bet you a new kite that April 25th for the DQ should be MEMPHIS not Memphis. I suspect a typo, but not really positive. A 14 night cruise would be a little unusual, especially as an inaugural, ah but to dream... I suspect the first cruise is a 7 nighter, NOLA to MEMPHIS, the next cruise a 7 nighter, MEMPHIS to CINCINNATI...but I will admit that this is an educated guess on my part.

The thing that gets me about this schedule is that the DQ starts so late and ends so early. And very little on the Mississippi...And the AQ never leaves the Mississippi.

I mean, come on...If it's March, and the Krause's are still breathing then it must be the DQ! not in 2008.

Matter of conjecture on my part, but as I study this schedule, I suspect that anytime the DQ's schedule says Cincinnati it should read CINCINNATI. I'll bet a cruise there is no way MAL is going to have all those 10 to 14 night cruises, a quick count of 13 cruises that long, quite a few back to back. And I doubt that the DQ is only starting from Cincy once in 2008...so this has got to be typos, 11 times by my count and 2 times for Memphis (really to be MEMPHIS).

Now, if I'm right, then most of the DQ cruises have been shortened to 5 and 6 nighters. And I'm not saying that is a bad thing...

yes, I'm hogging the thread...The thing that is cool about this schedule format is that you can see instantly if any of the boats are rafting together. Such as May 7th, May 14th, May 26th... May 27th, Cincinnati, looks to be a toughie for the company. The DQ's starting a new cruise the same day the MQ is doing her shore tours, all in the same city.

Bruno,
the original message sent to me showed the trip start/end cities in a grey box, so doubt that those are typos. And why is she so late starting, and so early ending her trips? I'm just posting what was sent to me!

Hi, Dave & Bruno. Waaaaay, back, those longer trips were the rule rather than the exception, though times and peoples' travel habits were somewhat different then. The old times I'm referring to were the Greene Line days; all trips started and ended in Cincinnati. The longest was a 21 night Cinci/NO/Cinci round trip, and they did those even after I started on the boat in 1975. I'm not sure what they'd do as far as a St. Paul trip back in the Greene Line days; that would be a long one, Cinci/St. Paul/Cinci. Maybe Dale or someone else will come in and clarify that one.

One thing that they used to do back then that has been either discouraged, or just plain not allowed recently, is that they would allow partial booking of a trip as the trip got closer. So, if you had, for instance, a N.O to Cincinnati trip, but you wanted to get on at Memphis (or Paducah, etc.) and finish the remainder of the trip, you could do it. I remember one time in about 1978 or 79, we had a gentleman who's life-long dream was to ride the DELTA QUEEN, but he was of limited means and could not afford a full cruise. His wife, knowing how much he wanted to ride the boat, saved her money and bought him a trip from St. Louis to Cairo (on a St. Louis/Cinci trip). This was only one night, but you never saw any person have more fun than that man did on that 30 hours on the DQ. If they are doing these longer trips, and would allow partials, that might be a very good thing, though somewhat harder for the hotel part of the crew to deal with.

In the early 1970's, when the DQ was threatened with extinction, Betty Blake made a concious effort to create the short trips we now take for granted -- the N.O weekends, but also St. Louis Weekends, Memphis Weekends, Cinci, etc. Her thinking was that all the folks who supported the boat through their letter-writing campaigns to Congress would be rewarded by having a short trip that they could afford. I dare say this earned the company many loyal customers (Judy Patsch, Ann Zeiger, myself and scores of others) who never would have sprung for a 7 night or more cruise. If the new company will allow partials on thsoe long trips, it may very well be a good way to introduce a new group of people to steamboating.

Bob, Deb's and my first cruise with DQSC was a four nighter, a Cincinnati roundtrip on the MQ. We probably would have never gotten "a taste" if a four nighter that was close, within driving range, of Rochester, hadn't been offered. We would have never taken the cruise if it was more money and/or if we would have had to fly, so the 4 night thing worked for us then. The longest cruises I have seen in my eight seasons of cruising, discounting the Great Excursion which was unique, are eight and a rare 11 nighter.

I personally would welcome the return of 5 and 6 night cruises. May attract a few new passengers to the company. Now, Deb and I think any cruise 3 nights or shorter is a tease, but a five or six nighter would work just fine, thank you.

When Delaware North decided to put the AQ based in New Orleans, it was to have 3 and 4 night trips. It was frequently still marketed as a week long vacation with the other nights at a New Orleans hotel. The programs was actually successful until Katrina blew into town.

From crew a standpoint, shorter cruises mean harder work but also more money. The harder work is partly because all cleaning and paperwork that is done between cruises must be done more frequently. All cleaning is done constantly anyway but I am talking about simple things --- i.e the bar fruit tray is usually kept covered in the cooler overnight. At the end of a cruise, it is started fresh again. As for the more lucrative, that is because it attracts people who are doing this for the first time and it is a teaser. But those people are fun-loving and usually spenders.

By the way, one of the saddest stories of my years on the boats was a passenger in his forties who had saved up for his trip of his dreams. He had brought a girlfriend along but it was definately the wrong girl. She complained endlessly about everything. He had watched the boats as a kid growing up and this was going to be the trip of a lifetime for him. I was not the only crew member who wanted to dump her in the river or leave her at a shore tour (which they did not go on probably because of money.) FYI- he was a low ball in the tips department too and I believe his sincerity that the trip was out of his price range.

The trips are expensive. If it weren't for Phyllis Dale finding us some real deals(free ad, Phyllis!), and the info posted here about concerns of the future operation of some of the boats, we probably wouldn't have yet gone! It was time to go--after 36 years of waiting! Fortunately, we had some luck in buying and selling our new house & our old house, and Linda inherited a few bucks when her father died (once again, that CA real estate market). Now this second trip probably means I won't get a new roof on my shop for at least another year--out with the caulking gun again! And my conversations with folks around here who do blue water cruises think that even our deals are too expensive for their cruising budgets. Well, I dunno, I think I got good value for my money--kite, $2.00, extra suitcase for DQSC logoed items bought on sale, $12.00 (ain't A. Schwab's wonderful), Video Camera to catch the trip, $300.00, Trip on the DQ, playing the calliope, & meeting some of y'all--PRICELESS!

Did any body notice that we are STEAMBOAT'N again. Yes, I realize it's not the exact same spelling. Clever way around what I perceive to be a trademark?

I'm thrilled, thank god for small favors...

Earlier this year MAL sent me a survey to fill out expressing my interest level in varous cruises. I had to rank what they sent by my level of interest.

The shortest cruise on the list was 7 days. I had more of an interest in the Ohio river cruises, specifically anything that went through Marietta.

According to this schedule there would be 20 days in which the MQ (8 days) or the DQ (12 days) would be in Marietta. The two boats would be passing each other a lot.

The MQ trips are mostly Louisville /Pittsburgh and the DQ trips are Nashville Pittsburgh.

That last trip of the season on the DQ does look interesting, although I doubt I could afford Pittsburgh all the way to NOLA.

Cost factors in long versus short trips (or cruises).

I am sure that the additional expenses with shore service shuttles to and ftom airports along with programs for people who decide they want to park their cars at a specific port are also factors in long versus short trips. The increasing airfares also factor into things.

While I realize that getting an all inclusive package is tricky, perhaps the longer cruising structure is because as crazy as it sounds, the surveys that MAL is getting are indicating the attitude of- if I have to pay that much money, I want the whole enchilada.

I found it very difficult to quote prices to my friends in the Northeast. I also direct them all to Phyllis Dale, confident that she will get them the best deal that she can. Like all of the hospitality and travel industry, they want to reward the people who book early and not do last minute bargains to fill the boats. There is a great deal of logic to this as far as planning and management. You will receive the deepest discounts when you book a trip far in advance.

However, all that said, the crowd of age 40-65 may not be able to make that kind of time committment far in advance.

I like the idea of shorter trips and partial trips but I know that is harder to manage. Again, I wish MAL success- no matter how they are trying to get there from here.

FYI- I went to a luncheon yesterday of ham radio operators. I was wearing my DQSC sweater and jacket. I got lots of comments from former passengers of the steamboats.

The Cincinnati/St. Paul roundtrip was also 21 days.

Steamboating colleagues:
Judy and Bob are 100% correct about the New Orelans and St. Paul DQ trips being 21 day R/T affairs back in the GREENE LINE days. In fact, all trips were R/T from here then: Kentucky Lake 7 days, Pittsburgh 10 days, Reelfoot Lake trip 7-8 days, I 'think', Cincinnati to Cairo and return, 7 days. Many passengers drove to the GL wharfboat, parked their cars under cover for the duration of their trip or up in town at long-term lots. Others locally were driven down to the landing; others arrived by bus, air and train.

Yes, when Betty Blake came aboard big changes were made in trip schedules. R/Ts were greatly altered or cut in place of one-ways, as many know today. I recall vaguely at the time Betty bringing in an expert from the travel industy/cruise lines to rework the DQ's trips along the new schedules. Changing vcation needs for many were focusing on the 7 day arrangement. The one way's, in essence, maximixed company revenue but caused no small amount of logistical issues with passengers board/leaving the boat along the way with transportation back to their point of origin. There's a clipping buried here from the local papers at the time showing this gentleman, along with an interview, but I can't find it in all the junk here now. Thanks for remembering this. Now back to mixing and laying fresh concrete.

Cheers,
R. Dale Flick

Years ago long vacations were the norm...my Grandfather Zahn always took 3 weeks in August for the family to go to the summer home...so back in the 40's & 50's those 21 day trips were feasible!

Today, many working people inthe US have a maximum of only 3 weeks vacation...

Thats why people like me need quality time, instead of quantity time...

Yes, my first trip was a 3 day Dick Billings charter and the next year I started with the longer trips. Hard to believe now, but I wasn't sure how much I'd like it, and blowing $180 for 3 days wouldn't have been too painful. I always advise people who aren't sure if they'd like it or not to take a shorter trip first, nothing worse than being stuck somewhere for a week in a situation you don't like. As to the 21 dayers, that can still be done by booking back to backs. Back in '77, my 28 consecutive days were made up of: 7 days Cincy-Pittsburgh RT, 7 days Cincy-Ky. Lake RT, 3 day Cincy RT, and an 11 day Cincy-St. Paul. People who want to do the whole Mississippi can(or could) do a NOLA-St. Louis segment followed by a St.Louis-St. Paul. The last time the company offered a St.Paul-NOLA one unit trip was in '04 on the MQ, when she had the 6 day boiler layup here, which blew that trip. Often its almost as cheap, and certainly easier, to book back to backs to make it a round trip, as far as plane connections or driving go...

David: I'm sure glad to see that schedule. I heard a pretty nasty rumor after we got off the DQ in Memphis on March 24. We were walking in town a few blocks from the river, and we were approached by a guy trying to sell rides on one of the day boats. We told him that we weren't interested, since we had just gotten off a week's trip on the DQ. He replied, "Oh, what can you tell me about the rumor that is all over town about the DQ. This will be her last season on the river. She is being sold, and is going back to CA and will be joining her sister-boat the Delta King in Sacramento as a floating hotel." We told him we had heard no such thing, and went on our way.

Not being one wanting to spread runors, I didn't post it here. But I kept having that nasty feeling, "What if its true?" I guess your schedule makes it certain that the rumor was false. Thanks a lot.

For our trip, Birmingham to Chattanooga, we are renting a car to drive back to Birmingham (2+ hour drive!) so our airfare is round trip. Found out flights into Chattanooga cost a whole lot more than into Birmingham!
Let's see, takes 7 days to boat and 2+ hours to drive back!! But, if I had my druthers, I'd boat back!!
Steamcerely,

Jim- on rumors-the schedule doesn't provide re-assurance in my book. But the fact that the DQ is the most consistently filled boat of the 3 would indicate that would not be the one to be sold.

The DQ has age as a factor both for and against. The DQ doesn't have handicapped access as a factor. But the DQ has more charm----she is really the most charming boat. She is also the right size.

I think that part of the problems that all of the owners of the DQ have had was that she is such a charmer, that the MQ and AQ were built because the waiting list for the DQ was too long. Now the companies struggle to fill all 3 boats.

Anyway, I am sure lots of rumors are flying under MAL but I would just continue to support and ride the boat of your choice.

Cheers

Elaine: I'll certainly agree with you that the DQ has the most charm and is the right size. On our DQ trip in March, we tied up alongside the AQ in Natchez. Took a quick walk through. Nice, but no thanks. Certainly not the DQ.

I suppose that the tentative schedule for 2008 would indicate that she'll still be around for at least another year. I can't really believe it would be economically feasible for anyone to buy her, and ship her back to CA. Probably would use a "heavy lift" ship instead of towing, but that sure isn't cheap! I wouldn't be surprised if it was cheaper to build a pretty close replica (without the propulsion machinery, etc.)

So, I'll still keep the DQ on my list for another trip in the next few years, if I can afford it.

Regards, Jim

Jim,
Well, I live an hour and a half from the Delta King's dock, and there is NO talk out here of such a thing. The DQ may have been born here, and built to run here, but she now has a much longer history on the Big Muddy than here--in fact, she was basically a new boat when Cap't Greene bought her. I have realized that I am older than he was (or ever was) and cannot imagine doing such a bold thing!
The rumor we heard was that she would be taken to NOLA and turned into a floating hotel/restaurant. Now there are many reasons why this would be ALL wrong--not the least is the lack of operating, but also when the next storm hits (not IF, WHEN) she would be powerless (pun intended) to go elsewhere for protection.
The big thing to watch is the extension of her exemption to the Ships at Sea law. Without that, she can't run, at least not as an overnight boat.
I was onboard with Jim, and I agree about the AQ, nice, fancy, but it was sooo good to be back aboard the DQ--HOME!
Long live the DQ!!!

After reading all of the other posts and watching the Interview that Carmen posted the link but David probably won't be able to see on his computer, I want to mention that the president of MAL- another David seemed to emphasize the number of "ships" in his fleet and how their small size made a unique experience.

Thus, even if MAL does seem to emphasize the AQ-and Dale's article in AAA Magazine put a good emphasis on the MQ- the DQ still is the right size.

As for making her a stationary hotel/restaurant. They just did a lot of boiler work parts and refitting. The captains comment on how much easier she is to pilot. As for Safety at Sea and exemptions- my impression of MAL is that they have an even more well-oiled political machine than Delaware North did. I just don't think that would happen. But I also think a lot depends on the re-building of New Orleans. Or will the boats change their home base to St Louis?

One of the things about the 7 day or longer trips is the 2 different ports of embark and debark. Those cities need services as evidenced even by the discussion on this very board.

FYI- When I was first offered a job around February or March 2001, it was aboard the DQ and I turned it down. A series of events including a trade show in New Orleans in June of 2001 inspired me to call the company back. They offered me a slightly different position on the AQ for even less money and I accepted. Then 9/11 and the bankruptcy. So, the AQ was my first boat and I am fond of her. But it did not take long for me to figure out the magic of the DQ. So, after having served on the AQ in 2001, the MQ in 2002, I ended up on the DQ in 2003. If I had been asked to do that in reverse order, it never would have happened.
