Greetings From New Orleans ,
A few nights ago myself , Capt. Doc Hawley , Capt. Don Summers , Capt. Vern Streckfus , Capt. Steve Streckfus , Capt. Duncan Armature , Capt. Steve Hoffman and Coast Guard , Commander Jimmy Duckworth once again sat down to a great dinner at Broussards , in the New Orleans , French Quarter . This has become some what of a local tradition now and who could ask for better company to recall and relive the famous steamboat " River Stories " and to just slightly exaggerate the events of the past .
Capt. Don Summers kept one and all mesmerized with his dry wit and
first hand knowledge and personal accounts of his time on both the Str.'s President and Admiral !
Capt. Doc told us of his most unforgetable stories and events on the Str.'s Avalon , Delta Queen , Mississippi Queen and of course the Natchez !
Capt. Vern , myself and Capt. Steve recalled past stories and events of our past on the steamers we worked and paid our dues on , not to mention many of the close and not so close incidents we encountered over the years on the different ships that we coned .
All and all it was just a great evening with good food , good friends and good stories ! These men will soon be gone but not the memories that they shared with us ! What a shame that these men and their memories and stories could not be taped and filed for those that will come to love the river and steamboating as much as we do !
Smooth Sailing !

Thank you, Ted! I had wondered what had become of Capt. Don Summers! Glad to see he is still alive and well and enjoyed dinner with y'all. I wish I could have been there!

Ted,

The National Rivers Hall of Fame in Dubuque has been doing exactly what you talk about here for the past three years! We have been interviewing river people on audio and/or videotape (pilots, masters, mates, deck hands, fishermen, cooks, boat builders, etc.) for our Oral Histories collection at the National Mississippi River Museum. There's probably 50 or 60 interviews in the collection to date. The snag in all of this is that we have a very small travel budget (actually, we don't have funds for travel at all) to allow us to get out to various locations around the inland rivers to talk to these men and women. Admittedly, a lot of our interviews have been made in the UMR region, but our intent is to "cover the waterfront" so to speak. I've made some interviews at Winona,MN; Prescott, WI; Le Claire, IA; Louisville, New Orleans and St. Louis, but only as I travel there for other business or pleasure. If you have the names or addresses or phone numbers of any of these great people who would be willing to give an interview, you can send that information to me, I will forward them to the Museum. And if you know of ANYONE there who would be willing to take the time to tape record an interview, please let me know. I agree 100%. We need to record and preserve these stories before these people are no longer with us. Thanks for any help you can provide.

David
