Yes, I know this has nothing to do with river, but over the years readers here have asked me about transatlantic crossings. The RMS QUEEN MARY 2's NYC to Southampton 7 night January 3, 2012 crossing has fares starting at $845.00 double occupancy for inside rooms up to sheltered and obstructed view balconies. Air can be arranged through Cunard.
In January 2010 the ambient temperatures during the day got to 60 degrees during the crossing and the seas were like glass. I can assure you though that is not always the case! On this year's QUEEN ELIZABETH crossing the waves were breaking over her head and the leaden skies let loose a snow squall or two.
Water, water, everywhere...
Seas like glass? How boring. I would feel cheated if there wasn't at least one good over the bow storm. Bonine works like a charm.
Ahh, you would have loved last January's Maiden Crossing of the Big Liz. Hurricane force wind gusts and 33 feet waves had whitewater hitting the windows of the Commodore Club, which is above the bridge, numerous times. I bet there were a hundred people sitting and standing there cheering each huge splash! Somewhere on You-Tube there are several videos posted of the crossing.
I know of three other S&D members that are now booked on this voyage. If anyone has ever considered a crossing on a true North Atlantic greyhound, this might be your opportunity. Sailing Party's in my room!
Twas something Mom always wanted to do, but never had the chance. Some family friends were very fortunate enough for their 25th wedding anniversary, fly the Concorde to London & sail back to New York on the QE2...
What a neat experience!
