More from Otter Creek, Calliope at Brandenburg
Otter Creek bend, with the high river current, made the DQ take some interesting angles, almost like dirt tracking around a sharp turn.
2 shots at Otter Creek
last one is near Brandenburg.. You can just see the steam from the Calliope. Great listening, even from the high overlook.

Late afternoon at Rocky Point, near Cannelton Locks
The DQ was catching up to a tow in the locks, so they made a loop and came back around in order to head into the locks in one sweep. The river current was very swift, making some turns a bit difficult.
Note stack being lowered (2nd photo) in prepartion of getting into the locks

A few comments on chasing the DQ
A relaxing change compared to chasing steam locomotive trips. At times a bit too relaxing. At 8-10 mph, one can easily get some distance ahead of the DQ and not always know where you are. A scanner radio helped as in many areas the Captain would state "Delta Queen approaching upper XXXX ", etc. Most locatons were on maps, but sometimes they used river names not on any road map.
When riding the DQ things seem to pass quickly and the river banks always seem to have lots of boat ramps, access and bridges. However when you are trying to get ahead by car the access sites seem to be hard to get to, private, or not in the right spot for lighting. There seem to be a lot fewer bridges when you want to get to the other side!
Again, thanks again to those who helped with some information. I'll try this again this year once I can figure out my travel plans.
OH MAN!!! GREAT PHOTOS! And on my part of the river. I grew up just down river from the shots at Otter Creek Park on the Indiana side. I know the farmer whose field is slidding into the river in that bend!
Isn't she just magnificient, majestic, courtly and all those terms!!! Where is Congress's head?!?!?!
What trip in July will you be on? I'm getting on with three friends July 1st in Cincinnati. Six weeks and one day!!!
will be on the St. Louis - Nashville trip, July 25-22

Jo Ann: My wife and I will be on the July St Louis - Nashville trip. Can't wait, especially after watching the DQ sail by with everyone on the decks relaxing. Need that DQ hot dog fix.
I hate to disappoint you, but I heard there was no longer a hot dog machine. Maybe a recent repeater can enlighten us about this (just another mistake made by Majestic America Line).
Hot dogs in the bar in the afternoon are gone, at least on the AQ. I was told they were eliminated from all the boats. I will say that the afternoon 4 o'clock bar munchies have improved a whole bunch over 2007, definitely good stuff now...On the AQ they now also have added two afternoon soups in the Front Porch, same soups as at lunch, but what the hey? I love soup...
The afternoon bar made to order, hot sandwich paninis on the AQ are also history. But, and I see this as huge, the afternoon AQ Engine Room Bar popcorn is back.
Well, Richard, if there's no hot dog machine in the Texas Lounge, you'll just have to go to a Cards game before you leave St. Louie. I've eaten a lot of dogs, and believe me when I tell you those at Busch Stadium CANNOT be beat!
Those are indeed great photos, Richard. Some remind me of old Bill Muster photos....
Killin' Dogs
Why is it they always kill the hot dogs when it comes time for cutting costs? Happened years ago on a gamlin' boat I know of, and the old-times still bring up memories of the massacre after all these years.
The P. A. DENNY was famous for the celebrated “Denny Dogs” that folks would spend half the ride standing in line waiting for one. Fifty cents was still cheap for a grilled dog, even in 1976, and we sold a load of them.
Great pics, I'll agree. But how much did the gas cost? Probably could have purchased a Kentucky Lake round trip ticket for about the same amount when I was working for Mrs. Greene.
Did some DQ chasing in those areas, but was with Mary Bill, who really knew the roads. I was taking movies and they turned out splendidly. No expertise on my part. All I did was hold up the camera. As you well know, however, it's not as easy as it sounds to find those riperian roads. Bill Muster, with a camera in his eye, could be found hanging from tree limbs or helicopters in some of the most remote spots on the river, a one man Delta Queen paparrazi.
Richard, those are fantastic shots and I hope that the bit of info I was able to give you helped. I waved to every person along the way hoping it was you. Yes, the day was cloudy as was most of the first few days of the trip but of course nothing spoils a Delta Queen odyssey.
Sorry to report that your hot dog craving will go unfullfilled unless things change by then. Thats right, no hot dogs in the Texas or any where else.
We're just back but will post a more complete report after unpacking and returning to reality.
Ginnie
I had the dark hat and silver jeep (rental!), hot dogs
I tried to wave back, but cameras got in the way.
As long as they stop with messing with the hot dogs, then OK. No TV or phones in the staterooms please.
Great pics Richard,
You followed the DQ from Otter Creek all the way to Cannelton locks, thats a long way. How many hours did it take? I haven't seen the DQ yet this year, even though I was probably within 500 feet of her at one point or another. I have been out on the boat, but was off watch and asleep when we passed the Delta Queen. 🙁
Again great shots.
Followed all day..
Sam:
Thanks for the comments. I arrived at McAlpine locks about 7 am, only to find that the DQ had departed about 6 am. After dodging Louisville traffic I finally caught up to her just prior to West Point. Using the Deloriane map I managed to get to about 15 locations between West Point and Channelton. So, this was an "all day until dark" trip. Cannelton Lock arrival was about 8:30 PM EDT. At one site, after explaining that I was looking for a road to the river, a local farmer gave me a ride through his muddy fields on an ATV to his private boat launch! I only posted thumbnails of a few views. The best photos (hopefully) will be on film...need to wait a week or two. Will make some prints to bring on our July St. L - Nashville trip for anyone on that run.
