A New Orleans harbor salute to Capt. Clarke 'Doc' Hawley, who celebrates his birthday today. This man needs no introduction, and for many of us who love the river, he was one of the people responsible for instilling that love into us. His anecdotes and knowledge are priceless, and the fact that he loves to pass that wisdom on to the younger generation proves him to be a great man. If it wasn't for him, I would have never stepped up to the keyboard that blustery day on February of 2006. I enjoy every moment I get talking with him about the river, and I'm sure others do as well. Keep up steam, Capt!
A Whistle Salute to Capt. Doc!
As Matt so eloquently wrote, Capt. Doc Hawley has been a guiding light and good friend to many of us who love the river and steamboats. I first met him aboard the DELTA QUEEN when I was a youngster and it's hard to believe that over four and a half decades have passed since. During our time together aboard the BELLE OF LOUISVILLE, which I greatly treasured, among many things, he taught me to make his famous "excursion boat popcorn" (HEAVY on the salt so they buy LOTS of soft drinks!) and to play "The Saint Louie Blues" on the callyope.
Thanks for your friendship and guidance Doc, and a whistle salute to you today -- amongst a calliope chorus of "76 Trombones" to mark your natal day! You are a national treasure!
Keep up steam and keep rollin' on the river!
Happy Birthday, Captain Hawley. Miss your talks on the DELTA QUEEN. Maybe again someday. Hope you have a great birthday.
We´re adding our best wishes! Hope you had a wonderful birthday, Captain!
