A long and loud whistle salute -- and a rendition of "HAPPY BIRTHDAY" on the cally-ope for David Tschiggfrie, former DQ crew member and Dubuque steamboat historian/buff second to none! I won't disclose his age, but a couple of clues are that he was "launched" the same year that the DQ came to the Mississippi and the ISLAND QUEEN blew up at Pittsburgh!

People simply don't come any finer than Dave and one of the many and great blessings in my life is his loyal and true friendship of the past 35+ years!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAVE!!!!! And many THANKS again to you and son Jonathan (a very fine young man!) for that fabulous program on the Str. AVALON at the Howard Steamboat Museum this past July. The sternline telegraph informs me that people are still buzzing about it ---- as well they should be!

Keep Up Steam for many more years of rolling on the river!

Steamboating colleagues:
Thanks to Keith [He has a photographic memory] for tipping us off Re: David's birthday. David, you're catching up with me. Time going by for sure for all of us. Ummm, I 'think' another friend, true steamboater and prominent poster on this web has a B-Day coming soon.

David, there were many compliments Re: the aforementioned program on IDLEWILD/AVALON/BELLE OF LOUISVILLE at the recent S&D meeting from those who viewed it. I'm adding it to my 'must see' list next time. Programs, writings, recorded speeches are getting it down now before all is lost or forgotten.

Cheers and congrats,
R. Dale Flick

Dubuque has the well-known and well-financed Museum, but they've got a greater river history natural resource in David T - many happy returns and keep on sharing your memories with us!

Dave,

I want to add my best wishes (although I´m obviously one day late, but I´ve been out of town - in Salzburg - all day yesterday). Many happy returns! And again a big thank you for the wonderful time we´ve been able to spend with you in Louisville and Dubuque!

To my steamboat friends, thank you for your kind birthday greetings. Don't know when and where all those years slipped by, but they are truly "loaded to the guards" with treasured memories of people and experiences. The steamboat community is a family that is most dear to me, and I am both blessed and privileged to call so many of you friends. Hopefully we can continue to share those steamboating memories and stories with each other for many more years whenever and wherever we gather. Thanks again for your birthday wishes.

Dave,

The celebration of your birthday is so special that the RH Shipyard will remain closed until Tuesday. HBD from all the crew down here in the Hash. We remain: "Not too far from Crazy Clifford's, and just a piece from Shantyboat Mike's".

Dave: best wishes on your BD. I hadda good time at your "do" at Howard's last summer and know that the Rabbit Hash Boat yard folks are flockin up to Covington (actually Newport) tomorrow to hear Virginia Bennett tell obout workin' on a packet boat...starting with the Chris Greene. Check with Kentuckyhaus.com for details but it will be there at 411 east Tenth St in Covington (Newport) Saturday Sept 23, 2006 from noon til two PM. Cap'n Walnut.

I beg leave to edit this as Cap'n Walnut got things mixed up (I'll blame it all on him). He got the stuff right enuff about Dave's BD 'n such, but he had Virginia Bennett speaking in Covington when it was actually Newport at the Kentucky Haus. As it turned out, Virginia could not make it due to flooding at her apartment last (Friday) night. Conditions permitting, she may appear there next week (9-30-06, noon til two) along with the author of the book: Along the Ohio River Cincinnati to Louisville, Robert Schrage. Co author Don Clare won't make it due to work. A call to Kentucky Haus at 859 261 4287 as the event approaches may give you more info. Tom Schiffer

Happy Birthday from the Mississippi Queen, Phil Westbrook and Paul Penta. Phil played HB to you on the calliope from St. Paul today at 3:30. They will be in Dubuque on Tuesday just in case you couldn't hear it from there!
Best Wishes, Linda

Thanks for the cally-ope birthday salute from the MQ! Shucks -- if I'd a-known you all were going to do that, I'd have had my son Jonathan listening this afternoon. He's a sophomore at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, and his dorm is only a couple of blocks from the River! At any rate, thanks for your steam serenade!
