A long and two shorts of the whistle to Capt. Alan Bates today on a "milestone" birthday!
All the best to you Alan, and THANKS for being a mentor to so many of us. I treasure what you wrote in my autograph book when I circulated it in the pilothouse of the BELLE one summer day in 1969: "Best wishes to Keith, who at 15 years old is TOO OLD to escape the river!"
Keep up steam!
Keith
P.S. The photo herewith is taken atop the pilothouse of the Streckfus excursion steamer WASHINGTON, at Madison, Indiana.
Happy Birthday, Alan!!
Herzlichen Glückwunsch zum Geburtstag, Alan!!
I just thought about posting something but Keith was faster than me.

Thanks, Cap'n Alan...
Thanks, Captain Bates for having your Happy (How Many?) Birthday today.
We were scheduled to coal-tar the bottom of a too-bigg'a boat, but now the Rabbit Hash Boat Works is not only closed for the day, but down for the entire weekend with Monday to recover. That's how much we care... and thanks again for conveniently having your Special Day today.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
I did not intend to be 85 years old today. It is all my parents' fault!
Thank you for your kind attentions.
Alan
And best wishes from down here in Georgia!
Cap,
Happy Birthday to a true river legend....for your penned lines help keep the traditions we all love so much alive every day on the rivers!
The real gift has been ours...so for you, a great day is our wish!
~Travis~

A very "Happy Birthday" from the dynamic duo at the Circus World Museum in Baraboo! Would have played it on the calliope (a "CAL-ee" up here), but as the instrument is Remarkably Dangerous, they didn't have steam up. We'll see you in a few weeks at Judy's Streckfusicent presentation at the Howard!
Jon,
I hear they have to get some special permit before they can get steam up on the AMERICA wagon. The Morecrafts were up there last weekend and were let down that they couldn't play or hear the cally.
First you have heard that word? It is a regular in my vernacular...just as is cally-ope. I just don't say them on the river since Capt. C.W. stoll taught me not to do that!
~Travis~
Hey Alan, Happy Birthday from a fellow Louisvillian, (at least for the first 20 years)!
Happy Birthday ALAN
