The sad news has come of the passing of Mrs. Willie Lee Palmore, 84, after a long illness, on Saturday, December 1st. Mrs. Palmore, mother of Capt. Lexie Palmore McMillen of DELTA QUEEN fame and well known fine artist (now operator of the steamboat GRACEFUL GHOST on Caddo Lake in Texas) was a longtime professor at Tyler Junior College, Tyler, Texas. Funeral services were yesterday. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to the Fifth Street Presbyterian Church of Tyler. Mr. and Mrs. Palmore made many trips on the DQ and were truly fine and delightful people. A long whistle salute to their memory and my deepest sympathy to Lex and all her family.

Thanks so much for your kind words. Although my mother was not a water person, (believe it or not,) she did enjoy her trips on the Delta Queen. Heck, she's even been to the Galapagos Islands (much to the astonishment of her family). She will be greatly missed.

Hi, Lexie:
My sincerest sympathy to you. Hearing that your mother was a professor [Biology?] she would have felt right at home visiting the Galapagos Islands. Memories of Charles Darwin and the BEAGLE no doubt were in her mind. Once you're on a steamboat, you're 'hooked for life.' There 'runs a river' in all of our lives.

Cheers,
R. Dale Flick

She was part of a group of biology teachers. It was quite an adventure, but Mother liked to travel. Guess I come by that naturally. It's why we're in Texas. My great, great grandfather traveled part of his journey from Connecticut to Texas by steamboat. He considered that the vessel was being run irresponsibly and that his life was always in peril. He was probably right. That was in the 1830's.
